Hongkou Cemetery: A City of the Dead
The sustainable architecture of Hongkou Cemetery: A City of the Dead responds to the increasing need for accessible burial spaces in Shanghai by merging high-density functionality with a thoughtful spatial experience. This project, conceptualized by Kevin Khoury, was honored with an Honorable Mention in the Circle of Life competition, reflecting its innovative approach to urban cemetery design.


Architectural Philosophy: Blending Tradition with Modernity
The design elevates the structure above the ground, allowing for an expansive public park beneath while maintaining a monumental presence. The central vortex atrium offers an inverted perspective, drawing inspiration from traditional Chinese well-field planning and the concept of Qi energy flow—linking heaven, earth, and human existence.
Structural Innovation: Earthquake-Resistant and Modular Growth
Inspired by the Westcoast Transmission Tower in Vancouver, the building consists of four independent quadrants anchored to a central super-column, using suspended cable construction. This structural logic enhances earthquake resistance while ensuring the cemetery can expand incrementally to accommodate future demand, making it the most space-efficient cemetery in the world.


Scalability and Population Needs
With Shanghai’s population exceeding 26 million, the cemetery can house over a million burials within just 20,000 square meters. The modular construction allows for phased expansion while maintaining seamless circulation, critical for large-scale events such as the Qingming Festival.


A Model for Future Urban Cemeteries
Through an inclusive approach to burial practices and an emphasis on eco-friendly architectural design, Hongkou Cemetery reimagines urban cemeteries as vertical sanctuaries that harmonize with their cityscape. This project serves as a blueprint for sustainable memorial architecture worldwide.
