Perched on a 991-square-meter plot along the serene shores of Lac de Joux, House EMGD exemplifies the seamless fusion of residential architecture, ecological design, and breathtaking lakefront views. Designed by renowned Swiss firm Ralph Germann architectes, this contemporary home was envisioned for a two-person household with one key priority: all main living spaces must enjoy unobstructed views of the lake. Achieving this required a remarkable engineering feat, eliminating supporting pillars to create expansive, uninterrupted sightlines.

Architectural Concept: Simplicity and Connection with Nature

Ralph Germann embraced a minimalist aesthetic reminiscent of traditional boathouses, allowing the lake to become the central visual element. The open-plan living room and kitchen are oriented entirely toward the water, establishing a fluid connection between interior spaces and the surrounding landscape. Large windows frame panoramic views while letting natural light flood the interiors, creating a warm, inviting atmosphere.

Sustainable Materials and Ecological Design

Sustainability is at the heart of House EMGD’s design. The exterior and interior extensively utilize burning wood, chosen for its ecological benefits—untreated and unpainted, it reduces chemical impact while emphasizing the home’s graphic, linear architecture. The residence is further enhanced with geothermal heating and solar panels integrated into the roof, reflecting a commitment to energy efficiency and eco-conscious living.

Innovative Roof Design

One of the most striking features is the large, walkable roof, which serves multiple functions: it offers shelter from rain and snow, provides shade from summer heat, and frames carefully curated views of the lake. The roof’s four corner pillars elegantly drain rainwater while adding to the home’s sculptural presence. This multifunctional roof design reinforces both aesthetics and practicality, making the home a true architectural statement.

Interior Design: Modern Comfort Meets Timeless Elegance

The interior design complements the ecological and architectural approach. Carefully selected furnishings from B&B Italia, Cassina, and MAXALTO harmonize with natural materials, while open layouts and wooden finishes create a cozy yet sophisticated environment. Every detail is designed to maximize comfort while maintaining a visual dialogue with the lake outside.
