House in Leblon: A Sky-High Urban Oasis by AGENCIA TPBA

Perched 25 meters above the bustling streets of Leblon, Brazil, the House in Leblon by AGENCIA TPBA redefines urban living with a delicate balance of privacy, greenery, and panoramic views. Completed in 2024 and spanning 2,476 ft², this innovative residence turns a dense city block into a serene retreat high above the ground. The project was captured beautifully by photographer Javier Agustin Rojas, highlighting its unique integration of nature, structure, and light.

A Floating Green Perimeter: Nature Meets Urbanity

The house is surrounded by a 20x10 meter green perimeter, a modular system of steel profiles and built-in planters that serves as a visual filter between the interior and the chaotic urban environment. This verdant barrier ensures privacy, creating an intimate internal “oasis” while maintaining a strong visual connection to the iconic landscapes of Rio de Janeiro and the expansive sky above.

This innovative green envelope not only softens the urban backdrop but also functions as an architectural mediator, blurring the boundary between exterior and interior. Residents can enjoy the sensation of being immersed in nature while still being firmly in the heart of the city.

Light, Transparency, and Functional Elegance

A portion of the interior is covered by a lightweight glass roof, forming a solarium pavilion protected by a wooden grille. This design allows daylight to penetrate while shielding occupants from direct sun and rain. Polished stainless steel columns support the roof, leaving the structural axis free for a system of frameless sliding glass panels, which enclose or open the space depending on use.

The main access is thoughtfully designed through a strategic opening in the green perimeter, leading to an existing room that houses a compact kitchen, a toilet, and a creative atelier space, perfect for artistic or leisurely pursuits.

Outdoor Serenity and Ingenious Design

The exterior garden combines wooden decks and grass surfaces, offering a versatile open-air environment complete with an outdoor shower. At the center of the garden, a mirrored cylinder cleverly conceals technical ventilation equipment while doubling as a maintenance cabinet, blending utility with elegance.

This integration of functionality and aesthetics underscores the architects’ vision of a seamless indoor-outdoor lifestyle, allowing residents to experience both privacy and openness in a highly urban context.

A Flexible Interior for Modern Urban Living

The House in Leblon challenges traditional notions of a home. It’s conceived as an indeterminate interior, allowing occupants to define its use according to their needs. Rather than prescribing fixed functions, the house acts as a refuge and leisure space, offering an alternative form of luxury: a place to escape the city while remaining within it.

This project represents a new typology in urban residential architecture: where greenery, transparency, and elevated perspectives combine to create a floating oasis above the city, emphasizing well-being, privacy, and the enjoyment of free time.
