I-CONIC Nexity Regional Head Office by Brenac & Gonzalez & Associés: Innovative Architecture in Lyon
I-CONIC Nexity Head Office in Lyon features wave-like architecture, copper façades, flexible workspaces, rooftop terraces, and seamless integration with nature and cityscape.
Located in the vibrant Industrie district of Lyon, nestled between the hills of La Balme and the serene banks of the Saône River, the I-CONIC Nexity Regional Head Office is a striking example of contemporary commercial architecture. Designed by Brenac & Gonzalez & Associés and completed in 2022, this 13,240 m² office complex combines functionality, aesthetic innovation, and urban integration to create a dynamic workspace for Nexity’s regional operations.

Harmonizing with the Landscape
The building occupies Block 8, a site uniquely defined by its topography and proximity to the Saône. The plot’s natural relief significantly influenced the geometry of the structure, resulting in a building with a distinctive wave-like form. This undulating volume maximizes linear space while seamlessly integrating with the surrounding roads and urban grid. The building’s design responds thoughtfully to both nature and context, highlighting the relationship between the urban environment and the architectural form.

Dynamic Façades and Industrial Inspiration
The I-CONIC façade is composed of vertical metal slats that provide rhythm and structure to the undulating design. Its copper-colored finish draws inspiration from Lyon’s industrial heritage, particularly the chromatic palette of the nearby railway line. The façade not only defines the building’s visual identity but also enhances natural ventilation and daylighting, aligning with sustainable architectural practices.
Flexible, Human-Centric Workspaces
Designed as a modern office building, I-CONIC focuses on flexibility, efficiency, and the evolving needs of the workforce. While standardized workspaces support day-to-day operational needs, the design also introduces distinctive communal areas—conceptualized as “third places”—to encourage collaboration, creativity, and informal meetings. These spaces reflect the influence of the Google campus effect, catering to the new generation of workers who value high-quality work environments.
From the entrance halls with generous double heights to the central cafeteria, the building prioritizes connectivity and openness. The south hall features an inhabited bridge, offering panoramic views of Lyon’s skyline and fostering spontaneous interactions. The building’s network of vertical traboules—footbridges and staircases connecting terraces—provides alternative circulation, promotes wellness through walking, and reduces reliance on elevators.

Innovative Interiors and Multipurpose Spaces
Under the attic levels lies the Canuts, a unique double-height space that can serve as a VIP meeting room, open workspace, or mezzanine for creative functions. These adaptable interiors reflect Brenac & Gonzalez & Associés’ philosophy of architecture serving its users, providing both practical functionality and spaces that inspire innovation.

Rooftop Terraces and Green Integration
The building’s rooftop terraces are landscape-focused and multifunctional, designed for both relaxation and informal work. Depending on orientation, terraces can accommodate greenhouses, pergolas, solariums, or contemplative amphitheaters overlooking the Saône and La Balme. These elevated outdoor spaces integrate greenery and foster a connection with nature, enhancing employee wellbeing while reinforcing sustainable building practices.

Engineering and Collaboration
The success of I-CONIC is not only in its architectural form but also in its collaborative engineering and design approach. Key contributors include ILIADE Engineering, AIA for technical and structural solutions, 22 Degrés for landscape architecture, and manufacturers like GRAPHISOFT, Adapta Color, and Mitsubishi Electric. This collaboration ensured an innovative, high-performance building that balances aesthetics, sustainability, and user comfort.
The I-CONIC Nexity Regional Head Office stands as a landmark of modern office architecture in Lyon, merging functional workspace design, natural integration, and contemporary aesthetic. It exemplifies how thoughtful design can harmonize with its environment, elevate the quality of work life, and create spaces that are both inspiring and practical.
