IAC Residence by Francisco Hue Arquitetura
IAC Residence in Petrópolis blends modern design with natural topography, featuring wood structures, garden terraces, panoramic Serra views, and seamless indoor-outdoor living.
Nestled on a scenic mountain plateau in Petrópolis, Rio de Janeiro, the IAC Residence by Francisco Hue Arquitetura masterfully integrates architecture with the natural landscape. Overlooking a lush valley and facing the north-facing Serra da Maria Comprida, the residence is designed to embrace sunlight, panoramic views, and the surrounding topography without disrupting the site’s natural contours.

Conceived for a family that lives and works locally, this contemporary mountain home balances private family living with versatile spaces for weekend gatherings. Guest rooms and support areas are thoughtfully incorporated into the main body of the house, offering independent access while allowing the residence to expand seamlessly for visitors.

The house layout emphasizes connectivity and flow. The main entrance is approached via a pre-existing ramp leading to a welcoming patio, aligned along a visual axis connecting the entrance pergola, living room, veranda, and gardens. The kitchen, service areas, and pavilion rooms are carefully positioned along this axis, harmonizing common and private spaces while respecting the plateau’s upper edge.

Architecture & Design Features:
- Staggered levels throughout the home ensure all areas maintain direct access to the gardens and natural light.
- Garden slabs along the north and west facades act as verandas and solar protection, framing breathtaking Serra views through wall-to-wall upper windows.
- The living room roof is crafted in glue-laminated wood, allowing wide spans for a dramatic, open interior while echoing the surrounding landscape.
- Suspended garden slabs cover both the service and room pavilions, restoring the terrain affected during construction and creating walkable sky gardens following the site’s contour lines.
- Pool and leisure areas, positioned a level below the house, are accessed via a multifunctional staircase doubling as an amphitheater, visually connecting the residence with its outdoor terraces and the mountains.

The IAC Residence exemplifies sensitive design that celebrates natural topography, sustainable living, and seamless indoor-outdoor integration, making it an ideal example of contemporary residential architecture in Brazil.
