Impact Hub Reimagining Public Architecture for Creative Collaboration
Impact Hub: A visionary model of public architecture blending civic innovation, creative collaboration, and adaptive learning in Warsaw’s urban heart.
In a rapidly evolving urban context, the Impact Hub proposes a transformative public architecture model that transcends traditional spatial typologies. Designed by Sydney Nguyen and Natalie Wanjek, and honored as an Editor's Choice entry in Libgen 2019, this future-facing concept envisions a hybrid library, cultural center, and civic innovation incubator in the heart of Warsaw.
At its core, the project "Impact Hub" aims to redefine the architecture of public learning spaces by weaving community collaboration into every layer of the built environment. Four key programmatic zones form the foundation of this hub:
- Charrette Classroom Incubator – Facilitates civic engagement and youth-led initiatives through legislative writing, assembly planning, and public speaking programs.
- Exhibition / Conference Space – A venue for public art, mural commissions, and civic music festivals that connect artists and civic leaders.
- Test Kitchen – An interdisciplinary lab where artists and tech entrepreneurs co-develop innovative solutions like VR tools, wearable tech, and music synthesizers.
- Amphitheater – A flexible learning space where tech entrepreneurs and youth collaborate on coding and digital literacy.

Spatial Strategy: Contextual Integration
Located at the intersection of the Warsaw Highway, Vistula River, and Mokotow District, the architecture strategically responds to urban and ecological forces. Formal operations like Impale, Melt, Stretch, and Shuffle manifest in circulation systems, façade articulation, and the modulation of natural light.
These gestures aren’t merely sculptural—they ensure porosity, transparency, and diverse entry points for all user groups: civic leaders, local artists, tech entrepreneurs, and youth. Daylight strategies and layered programmatic zoning reinforce a building that responds to its climatic and social context.
Architectural Tactics
Through a dynamic envelope of “impaling” aluminum panels and “stretching” translucent strips, the Impact Hub optimizes thermal comfort, visibility, and lighting quality. Smaller overlaps on the façade accommodate task-lighting needs, while wider ones shade larger communal spaces.

Systems of Interaction
Rather than assigning rigid functions, the design emphasizes flexible architecture that encourages spontaneous collaboration. Circular diagrams visualize how various groups nourish, make, and share knowledge. Each layer of the building—from the northern arcade to the southern plaza—is carefully curated for intergenerational interaction.
“We believe the future is within the touch of our human imagination and power of creation.”
By situating design at the heart of creative exchange, the Impact Hub embraces architecture as a catalyst for innovation and social equity. It is a space where the boundaries between library, maker-space, and civic platform dissolve into a continuous field of potential.
This isn’t just a building—it’s a living, breathing framework for the future of shared learning.
