Shadow theatre
Ideas that were researched through the project were blurring boundaries between the interior space and exterior urban environment, experience of movement in time around the exterior as well as the interior, the feeling of being on the other side of a wall to something unknown - desire for exploring
The minimalist introvert form was shaped by the surrounding context and it stands as a light box enveloped within the glass that absorbs, reflects and filters light across facade and throughout the building. The facades translucent glass glows as it is illuminated by the sunlight, or the interior lighting, becoming a dynamic part of building as it reacts differently according to the light, time of day, weather, and the surrounding context.
As the sun begins to set, these luminous facades become animated by the silhouettes of people in the school which is why school is designed for students of drama/performing arts. The translucent white cladding contrasting with the surrounding buildings allows passers - by to catch glimpses of the dancers as they rehearse. On the facade may also appear big white screens that can be used by students to project, display their work and animate the outdoor space with art. In that case, context more precisely parking and park near school can become open air cinema/theater. Inside the building are created large, also glass walled studios, that allow students to see activities ongoing in different spaces and be encouraged to interact and meet.
Idea of the program organization and movement in school is solved through gradation from most public program on ground level (auditorium, places for stage performances, cafeteria), across work level on second floor (learning and open studios and classrooms) to the most private part on third level ( housing and informal places for gathering for students). Borders between these private/public spaces are crossed with the help of atriums which become elements of communication. With classification based on depth, program and size of atriums it creates network of open spaces that enable necessary pause between mentioned programs.
