JK House by João de Barro Arquitetura – Contemporary Minimalist Retreat in Minas Gerais, Brazil
JK House by João de Barro Arquitetura blends minimalist, rustic design with natural materials, Shou Sugi Ban wood, and open-plan modern living.
Located in a gated countryside community in Minas Gerais, JK House by João de Barro Arquitetura exemplifies the seamless fusion of contemporary design with rustic, minimalist sensibilities. Spanning 434 m², the residence harmoniously blends natural materials, artisanal techniques, and modern architectural strategies to create a serene, elegant living experience.

The façade and social areas prominently feature Shou Sugi Ban charred wood, a traditional Japanese technique that enhances both durability and visual depth. Complementing this, natural concrete slats clad portions of the exterior, while the Cumaru wood slatted ceiling runs throughout the social area and the couple’s bathroom suite, adding warmth, texture, and sophistication.

At the heart of the home lies a spacious open-plan social area, integrating the kitchen, dining, and living spaces. A central kitchen island and a long wooden dining table encourage gatherings, while the living room’s natural stone wall and charred wood paneling create a rich, tactile environment. Large glass panels and an articulated wooden brise ensure privacy, thermal comfort, and a smooth visual connection to the outdoor leisure area.

The private areas maintain a cohesive aesthetic, featuring stone and wood finishes, indirect lighting, and thoughtful spatial flow. A unique “camarão” system of folding aluminum panels separates the bedroom block, allowing flexible transitions between social and private zones. Bedrooms, office spaces, and bathrooms serve as intimate retreats, with spa-like bathrooms featuring soaking tubs for a wellness-focused lifestyle.

Every detail in JK House reflects intentionality—from material selection to spatial organization, highlighting a respect for artisanal craftsmanship and sustainable techniques. The design celebrates modern comfort while maintaining a profound connection to nature, making it a true manifesto of contemporary Brazilian residential architecture.
