Located in Dammarie-les-Lys, France, the Joliot-Curie School Catering Service and School Life Center, designed by Ateliers O-S architectes, exemplifies a thoughtful architectural response to educational and communal needs. Completed in 2022, the 3,099 m² project redefines the heart of the Frédéric Joliot-Curie High School campus, originally built in 1965, by breathing new life into Building C—a pivotal structure amidst the school's six-building layout spread across nearly five hectares.

A Contextually Sensitive Campus Transformation

Situated between the school’s staff parking area to the north, a forest to the south, and academic buildings to the east and west, the project is deeply rooted in its landscaped environment. The architectural approach embraces the site's natural and built context, establishing strong visual and physical connections with the surrounding forest and circulation paths.

Covered walkways link the refectory to neighboring facilities, while a canopy on the southern façade shelters students as they wait to enter the cafeteria. The orientation of the building and rooflines maximizes forest views and introduces natural light into the lower levels. Thoughtfully designed platforms on the north façade facilitate the seamless delivery of food adjacent to the parking area.

Functional Program Across Two Levels

The building unfolds across two distinct levels: a ground floor dedicated to dining and service operations, and a garden level that houses educational and support spaces.

  • On the ground floor, the layout includes food preparation areas, dishwashing facilities, cold rooms, storage spaces, and a student foyer. It also accommodates logistical components such as the delivery zone.
  • The garden level is split into two functional zones. The public-facing area includes student-oriented spaces like a club room, gym, and music room. The private staff-access area contains the head teacher’s office, archive rooms, staff changing areas, workshops, and a furniture store.

This tiered spatial strategy allows the architecture to respond to different user needs while integrating into the existing topography.

Architectural Expression: Metal, Light, and Clarity

The architectural language of the project is defined by a dual-register design. The lower volume features metallic grey corrugated panels, grounding the building with an industrial yet elegant material palette. This base volume is punctuated by carefully placed openings that offer glimpses into the building’s inner spatial rhythm.

Above, a perforated aluminum cladding forms a smooth, light-filled upper register that hovers above the base like a protective shell. This upper layer captures daylight and frames exterior views, particularly towards the forest, while discreetly concealing all rooftop technical systems. The pronounced overhang not only defines the entrance but also creates a weather-protective canopy for waiting students.

The north-south roof orientation plays a key role in reinforcing a harmonious relationship with nature. Meanwhile, the east-west wings open the structure to the rest of the campus, improving access and promoting visual transparency.

Sustainable School Architecture in France

The Joliot-Curie School project is more than a catering facility—it is a multi-functional, sustainable school life center that integrates dining, leisure, and educational programs under one architectural roof. With a focus on contextual integration, user comfort, and material clarity, Ateliers O-S architects has created a refined and functional environment that supports student wellbeing and school community dynamics.
