KaDeWe Café Berlin by Ester Bruzkus Architekten: A Fusion of Materiality and Contrast
KaDeWe Café Berlin blends industrial metals with handcrafted terra cotta, creating a vibrant, contemporary space that redefines modern café design.
A Contemporary Design Masterpiece in the Heart of Berlin
Nestled on the top floor of the prestigious KaDeWe department store in Berlin, the KaDeWe Café designed by Ester Bruzkus Architekten is a striking example of contemporary interior design that blends contrasting materials, textures, and colors. With a compact 35-square-meter layout, the project embodies a balance between raw and refined elements, offering an inviting space for shoppers to enjoy a moment of relaxation.

A Harmonious Blend of Opposites
The interior concept revolves around the interplay of natural and synthetic, smooth and textured, muted and bold—a theme that is integral to Ester Bruzkus Architekten's design philosophy. Stainless steel and mirrored metals meet glossy orange and lavender powder-coated surfaces, creating a futuristic yet inviting ambiance. These sleek industrial elements contrast beautifully with handcrafted terra cotta tiles sourced from Fornace Brioni, a renowned tile manufacturer known for its artisanal techniques.
The two distinct types of terra cotta tiles—marbled wall tiles and fluted counter tiles—add warmth and depth to the space. The marbled effect is achieved through a meticulous process of mixing various clays, ensuring that no two tiles are alike. This handcrafted aesthetic juxtaposes the precise, machine-finished metal elements, forming a dynamic interplay between the organic and the engineered.

Custom Lighting and Thoughtful Details
Lighting plays a crucial role in defining the mood of the KaDeWe Café. Custom-designed Litec-Leuchten lighting fixtures enhance the space, reflecting off the mirrored surfaces and amplifying the sense of openness within the compact footprint. The combination of carefully curated furnishings, color schemes, and materials results in an environment that is both playful and sophisticated, embodying the essence of modern café culture in Berlin.

A Unique Café Experience at KaDeWe
Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the KaDeWe Café is designed to be a sensory delight—a place where visitors can appreciate the tactile contrast of materials while enjoying a cup of coffee in one of Berlin’s most iconic shopping destinations. The thoughtful balance of traditional craftsmanship and contemporary design makes this project a landmark in Berlin's interior architecture scene.
