Nestled in the vibrant southeastern suburb of Mount Waverley, Victoria, Klim Coffee Roasting Co. is a new flagship café and coffee roastery designed by SuiL. Covering 176 m², this 2024 project elevates the café experience by combining artisanal coffee with immersive design, crafting a space where patrons can witness the entire coffee-making process. From bean to cup, every detail is curated to engage coffee enthusiasts in a warm, inviting environment.

Transforming a Cold-Shell Tenancy into a Craftsmanship Hub

Originally a cold-shell tenancy with dual frontages featuring aluminum-framed glazing and bi-fold doors, the site posed a unique design challenge. SuiL’s vision was to establish a distinct identity of respectful craftsmanship, turning the space into both a café and a working coffee roastery. The architectural strategy introduces a “grid” and “box” design language, creating structure, flow, and visual connectivity across the space.

The grid framework aligns with existing window mullions, forming the structural backbone of the interior. Columns and beams define functional zones while maintaining maximum visibility through the glazing frontages. Within this framework, all café functions come together, including the café counter, retail displays, communal tables, bar seating, and the central Roast Room, aptly named “The Box.”

The Roast Room – Heart of the Café

At the core of the design lies The Box, the café’s Roast Room. Strategically positioned for visibility from all frontages, it allows guests to observe roasting and packaging processes through framed windows or a barn-style door. This central feature fosters a sense of connection, bridging the café’s operational and social spaces.

A handmade communal table sits between the Roast Room and café counter, creating a shared dining experience and offering unobstructed views of the coffee-making journey. The bar seating along the window frontage invites casual interactions with baristas, blending indoor and outdoor experiences seamlessly through fully opened bi-fold doors.

Warm, Textured Material Palette

The material strategy transforms the original cold concrete and aluminum shell into a bright, inviting interior. Timber and wood dominate the space, adding warmth, while porcelain slabs and steel plates form the café counter, tables, and display shelves. LED lighting integrated into the beams accentuates the grid structure, highlighting the architectural framework and emphasizing the careful detailing of every surface.

This design not only celebrates artisanal coffee culture but also demonstrates thoughtful café interior architecture, where each element—from structure to material—enhances the customer experience.
