Located in Bodman-Ludwigshafen, Germany, the Kronbühl Residence designed by Oppenheim Architecture stands as a poetic integration of architecture and landscape. Completed in 2022 and spanning 1,000 square meters, this elegant home overlooks the picturesque German side of Lake Constance, nestled between a thriving sunflower plantation and an expansive apple orchard.

Designed for a compact plot, the residence maximizes its footprint by embracing a three-story configuration carefully crafted to respect the surrounding environment. The design subtly embeds the home within the terrain, achieving a harmonious balance between built and natural elements.

Embracing the Landscape

At the foundation, a landscaped berm conceals the basement level, extending the garden seamlessly into the environment. This vegetated base anchors the entertainment spaces, swimming pool, and mature trees, forging a direct relationship between interior comfort and outdoor beauty. The basement floor houses an array of amenities including a garage, wine cellar, entertainment room, wellness center, and sauna. By integrating these features into the earth, Oppenheim Architecture reduces the perceived mass of the home, ensuring a low-impact visual presence within the quiet neighborhood.

Brutalist Elegance Meets Transparency

The middle level showcases volumes of bush-hammered concrete, strategically punctuated with expansive glass facades. These transparent panels frame dramatic vistas of the lake and surrounding fields, dissolving the boundary between indoor and outdoor living. Notably, the sliding glass panels — crafted with Sky-Frame’s Classic insulated sliding doors — disappear into concealed pockets within the concrete walls, offering uninterrupted panoramic views and reinforcing the residence's openness and flow.

Sculpted for the Views

Crowning the residence is an upper volume clad in wooden fins, designed in a distinct triangular shape. This form responds to the three principal views — the lake, the sunflower field, and the apple orchard — while also optimizing sun shading, privacy, and natural ventilation. The master bedroom, dramatically cantilevered over the middle level, captures breathtaking sunsets over Lake Constance through a minimalist corner window.

The interplay of material textures — from the rough concrete to the warm timber detailing — combined with precise alignments to the landscape, establishes the Kronbühl Residence as a quiet yet confident architectural statement. Rooted in sustainability and site-specific sensitivity, the home resonates deeply with its surroundings, offering its inhabitants an immersive living experience connected to nature.
