Los Colihues Pavilion by Dharq Arquitectos: A Sustainable Architectural Statement in Chile
Los Colihues Pavilion is a sustainable, solar-powered structure blending steel and wood, providing shade, energy efficiency, and a communal gathering space.
An Architectural Fusion of Sustainability and Functionality
Los Colihues Pavilion, designed by Dharq Arquitectos, stands as a striking architectural intervention in the Chilean landscape. The pavilion, spanning 120 m², is a minimalist yet functional structure that harmonizes with its natural surroundings. Conceived in 2022, this project embodies sustainable design principles, integrating renewable energy solutions while serving as a multifunctional space for social interaction.

A Pavilion Rooted in Sustainability
Situated on a wild and undeveloped site, the Los Colihues Pavilion was envisioned as a structure that supports the installation of photovoltaic panels, generating energy for lighting and water pumping systems. Beyond its technical function, the pavilion creates a shaded refuge, fostering a communal atmosphere around a large central table. By merging sustainable energy solutions with a thoughtful spatial design, the project establishes a unique dialogue between architecture and nature.

Structural Design: Steel and Wood Integration
A fundamental aspect of the pavilion was achieving the optimal height and angle for solar energy efficiency. To fulfill this, the architects employed a hybrid structural system using two key materials: steel and wood.
- Steel Elements: The metal framework comprises long, slender, and lightweight vertical supports, allowing the structure to blend seamlessly into its environment. This design choice ensures structural stability while maintaining a delicate, almost imperceptible presence in the landscape.
- Wooden Canopy: Above, a suspended wooden element provides a 2.5-meter-high shading system, casting dynamic shadows on the ground as sunlight shifts throughout the day and across different seasons. This feature not only offers thermal comfort but also enhances the visual and sensory experience of the space.

A Social and Functional Hub
At the heart of the pavilion, a communal space emerges, composed of a table, a bench, and a grill, forming a welcoming environment for gatherings. An adjacent open-air section, covered by lightweight fabric, moderates direct sunlight exposure while framing panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. This deliberate spatial arrangement reinforces the project's role as a meeting place, seamlessly blending architecture, energy efficiency, and community engagement.

A Model for Sustainable Design
The Los Colihues Pavilion exemplifies how contemporary pavilion architecture can embrace sustainability, renewable energy integration, and social functionality. By combining minimalist aesthetics with ecological sensitivity, Dharq Arquitectos has crafted an innovative space that responds to environmental challenges while celebrating human interaction.
