Manta Yoga Shala by Pablo Luna Studio: A Sustainable Sanctuary in Bali
Manta Yoga Shala by Pablo Luna Studio blends sustainable bamboo architecture with ocean-inspired design, creating a serene, eco-friendly retreat in Bali.
Manta Yoga Shala is a stunning architectural masterpiece designed by Pablo Luna Studio, forming an integral part of the Intaaya Retreat in Nusa Penida, Bali. Perched on dramatic cliffs overlooking the Indian Ocean, this eco-conscious yoga shala seamlessly blends with its natural surroundings, embodying a design philosophy rooted in sustainability, local craftsmanship, and environmental harmony.

Sustainable Design Inspired by Nature
At the heart of Manta Yoga Shala is a commitment to sustainable architecture. Designed with respect for the terrain, the structure incorporates locally sourced materials, ensuring minimal environmental impact. The project utilizes rammed earth walls mixed with limestone, repurposed from the construction site, while treated black Petung bamboo—sourced and processed in Bali—forms the primary structural framework.
A key sustainability feature is the Waste Water Garden system, developed in collaboration with the Biosphere Foundation. This system enables the recycling of treated wastewater for garden irrigation, reducing overall water consumption and enhancing the site's ecological footprint.

A Structure Inspired by the Manta Ray
Drawing inspiration from marine life, particularly the graceful manta ray, the yoga shala's architectural form echoes the fluidity and movement of this majestic creature. The design features sweeping bamboo arches that extend like wings, supported by a secondary gridshell structure that follows the natural topography of the landscape.
The roof is covered with handcrafted Ulin wood shingles, chosen for their durability and resilience against Bali’s humid and tropical climate. This material choice ensures the structure remains weather-resistant while adding an organic aesthetic that complements the surrounding environment.

Seamless Integration with the Environment
Inside, Manta Yoga Shala offers an open-air design that enhances natural ventilation, creating a serene and immersive experience for yoga practitioners. The polished limestone flooring provides a smooth, durable surface, while a central skylight bathes the space in natural light, reinforcing the connection between the built environment and nature.
With unobstructed ocean views, the structure fosters a continuous dialogue between the interior and exterior, allowing visitors to experience the tranquility of the sea, the warmth of natural materials, and the essence of mindful living.

Blending Craftsmanship, Sustainability, and Culture
Manta Yoga Shala is more than an architectural project; it is a testament to the power of sustainable design. By integrating traditional Balinese materials with modern bamboo construction techniques, Pablo Luna Studio achieves a harmonious balance between innovation and heritage.
This project stands as a model for eco-friendly retreats, setting a precedent for how architecture can respect and enhance the natural world.
