Mountain Lodge 14-Leguas: A Harmonious Retreat in the Sierras of Córdoba
Mountain Lodge 14-Leguas seamlessly blends concrete, metal, and stone, creating a sustainable, adaptable retreat amidst Argentina’s breathtaking Córdoba Sierras.
Blending Architecture with Nature
Nestled within the serene and rugged landscape of La Estancia, Argentina, Mountain Lodge 14-Leguas stands as a refined architectural response to its natural surroundings. Designed by 3164.estudio in collaboration with SDF Arquitectos, this modern mountain retreat seamlessly integrates with the rolling hills and rocky outcrops characteristic of the Córdoba Sierras.
The structure is carefully positioned to embrace the surrounding pine forests, offering a panoramic connection with the mountainous horizon. Designed as an essential element of the 14-Leguas subdivision, the lodge acts as a welcoming hub for visitors and a foundational space for future development.

A Structural Dialogue with the Landscape
Materiality and Construction Approach
The mountain lodge employs a raw, yet elegant material palette that emphasizes durability and a low-maintenance approach. The exposed reinforced concrete structure not only provides robust support but also harmonizes visually with the rugged terrain. The choice of local stone further strengthens this connection, serving as a retaining wall that defines exterior spaces and guides visitors through the site.
One of the most striking architectural elements is the metal roof, designed to float above the structure like a hang glider, mirroring the vast openness of the landscape. This lightweight yet resilient canopy shelters the entire lodge, providing essential protection from the elements while allowing for expansive views of the surrounding environment.

Functional Design with Adaptive Possibilities
Interior Layout and Spatial Organization
The lodge’s interior configuration is deeply influenced by the surrounding landscape. The southern section houses essential support spaces—including the kitchen, storage, foyer, and bathroom—overlooking the entrance to the subdivision. Meanwhile, the northern section is dedicated to a flexible, open-plan space, strategically oriented to capture unobstructed views of the sierras.
Currently, this area serves as a reception space for visitors, but its adaptable design allows for multiple future uses. With minimal modifications, it could transform into a private residence, an artist’s atelier, or even an intimate mountain restaurant, catering to select diners seeking an immersive experience within the landscape.
Outdoor Living and Expansion Areas
The outdoor spaces further enhance the lodge’s connection to nature. Beneath the extended roof eave, a shaded terrace provides a comfortable area for relaxation and social gatherings, while the stone retaining wall delineates additional outdoor functions, including storage and expanded seating areas. This careful zoning ensures a harmonious blend between built form and natural topography, reinforcing the project's commitment to sustainable architectural practices.
Sustainability and Timeless Integration
Beyond its structural and functional merits, Mountain Lodge 14-Leguas embodies a sustainable design philosophy. The use of exposed concrete not only minimizes maintenance requirements but also allows the building to age gracefully, bearing the marks of time while remaining resilient against the elements.
By prioritizing local materials and passive design strategies, the architects have crafted a low-impact retreat that harmonizes with its environment without unnecessary interventions. This commitment to sustainability, durability, and adaptive design ensures that the lodge remains a defining landmark within the 14-Leguas development, setting a precedent for future architectural projects in the region.
Mountain Lodge 14-Leguas is more than just a mountain retreat; it is an architectural statement that celebrates the rugged beauty of the Córdoba Sierras. Through its thoughtful material choices, adaptive functionality, and sustainable construction, the lodge exemplifies a refined approach to contemporary mountain architecture—one that respects its context while offering a timeless retreat for future generations.
