Musubi House by Craig Steely Architecture: A Sculptural Off-Grid Retreat in Hawaii’s Windswept Grasslands

Nestled on 100 acres of wild grassland and native ʻŌhiʻa forest along the northeast slope of Mauna Kea, the Musubi House by Craig Steely Architecture offers a remarkable blend of environmental responsiveness, sculptural form, and off-grid resilience. Located on the Big Island of Hawaii, this 2,200-square-foot residence is a bold cast-in-place concrete structure designed to fully embrace the dynamic climate and sweeping terrain of the Hamakua coast.


A Home that Floats in a Sea of Grass
Set amidst valleys carved by seasonal creeks and fields of swaying Wainaku grass, the Musubi House draws direct inspiration from its ever-changing surroundings. The region’s topography channels intense western trade winds and horizontal rains, making the site both spectacular and technically challenging. In response, the design imagines the house as a ship—floating in an ocean of grass, with its prow-like form slicing through the wind.
This triangular floor plan, with its sharp forward edge, deflects prevailing gusts, making the building both aerodynamic and poetic. The house’s profile mirrors the movement of the landscape itself, enhancing a visual and spatial synergy with nature. The name "Musubi" refers to its resemblance in plan to the Japanese-Hawaiian rice snack, echoing the structure’s compact and wrapped form.



Off-Grid Sustainability and Material Authenticity
The Musubi House is completely off the grid, powered entirely by photovoltaic solar panels and self-sustained with rainwater harvesting systems that supply both domestic use and irrigation. Cisterns collect rainfall from the angular roof, reinforcing the architecture's self-reliant ethos.
Three curving, cast-in-place concrete walls define the primary zones—bedroom/bathing, kitchen, and work/living—shaping a sheltered triangular atrium in the center. This open-air room, paved with Pāhoehoe lava stones and framed by tropical ferns and palms, acts as a connective heart that blurs boundaries between indoors and outdoors. With no roof above and retractable glass doors on either side, the atrium remains a protected sanctuary even in fog or heavy wind.


Architecture of Flow, Light, and Landscape
Musubi House is characterized by spatial fluidity and visual openness. The absence of interior doors allows for uninterrupted movement between zones and constant visual dialogue with the surrounding landscape. Floor-to-ceiling glazing invites the wild grasslands to the very edge of the home, reinforcing the experience of living within, not beside, nature.
Interior finishes are restrained and elemental—complementing the raw concrete structure with clean lines, curated furnishings, and thoughtful detailing. The architecture’s integrity lies not in ornamentation but in its deep connection to place and climate.



A Testament to Minimalism, Nature, and Resilience
In collaboration with Kauhale Kilohana Builders and structural engineers Walter Vorfeld and Associates, Craig Steely crafted a house that resists convention while celebrating vulnerability and exposure. Rather than sheltering entirely from the natural forces, Musubi House lives with them—offering a model for resilient, sustainable living in fragile, beautiful ecosystems.
