Nhà Hương House: A Harmonious Blend of Tradition and Modernity by H-H Studio

Nhà Hương House, designed by H-H Studio, is a masterpiece of contemporary Vietnamese architecture that gracefully combines modern living with traditional values. Located in Da Nang, Vietnam, this 238 m² residence reimagines the past while embracing the present. The home’s design reflects the family’s desire to maintain a close-knit lifestyle while paying homage to their cultural roots in Hue, the ancient capital of Vietnam.

Architectural Vision

The project’s lead architect, Huynh Tuan Huy, envisioned Nhà Hương House as a bridge between history and modernity. The design captures the essence of Hue’s architectural heritage, characterized by symmetry, natural materials, and an atmosphere of quiet contemplation. The homeowners, a family of five, sought a living space that could preserve these values while adapting to the dynamic lifestyle of Da Nang, a rapidly developing city.

Design Inspiration

Hue, the ancient capital of Vietnam and a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site, served as a key inspiration for the project. The architects aimed to create a house that evokes memories of Hue through its materials, spatial arrangement, and overall ambiance. This thoughtful approach results in a residence that feels timeless yet perfectly suited for contemporary living.

Site Layout and Orientation

The project was designed around two key orientations:

1. Tropical Garden Integration: The newly acquired land, measuring 5x24 meters, was transformed into a lush tropical garden. Facing west, the garden maximizes exposure to sunlight throughout the year, creating a vibrant outdoor space that complements the home’s interiors.
2. Optimized Functional Spaces: The existing building was reconfigured to align functional spaces with the south-facing garden. This arrangement takes full advantage of Vietnam’s favorable southern climate, ensuring natural ventilation and abundant sunlight throughout the home.

Architectural Features

Symmetrical T-Shaped Structure

The core of Nhà Hương House’s design is a symmetrical T-shaped structure. At its heart lies an atrium connected to the dining room, linking the renovated spaces with the newly constructed areas. This central atrium enhances airflow and natural lighting, fostering a sense of openness and connection.

Multi-Purpose Spaces

The first floor features a multifunctional space that transitions seamlessly between indoor and outdoor living. Overlooking the garden and aquarium, this area provides a tranquil retreat for the family. A bedroom on the ground floor offers direct access to the garden, ensuring comfort and convenience when hosting guests or spending time as a family.

Material Palette

Nhà Hương House utilizes a carefully curated material palette to create a harmonious and timeless aesthetic:

• Polished Concrete: Floors are finished with polished concrete and clear wax for a sleek yet durable surface.
• Cement-Based Walls: Walls and ceilings feature a scratched texture, finished with gray cement-based waterproof paint for a rustic yet modern look.
• Natural Wood: Wooden furniture adds warmth and a natural touch to the interiors.
• Ambient Lighting: Warm yellow LED lights complement the earthy tones of the materials.

Landscaping and Green Design

The garden is a central feature of Nhà Hương House, filled with fragrant plants and fruit trees sourced from Hue’s Thuy Bieu village. Key plant species include:

• Shrubs: Jasminum sambac, Osmanthus fragrans, and Gardenia jasminoides.
• Fruit Trees: Grapefruit, Thanh Tra, and Hoang Dieu orange.

The garden’s design prioritizes sustainability with natural drainage solutions and a grass foundation to promote greenery.

Traditional Architectural Techniques

Nhà Hương House incorporates traditional Vietnamese architectural techniques, ensuring a sense of cultural authenticity:

• Axial Symmetry: Spaces are arranged symmetrically to create a balanced and harmonious layout.
• Human-Centered Design: Activities are strategically placed at the center of spaces to enhance functionality and connection.
• Buffer Spaces: Transitional spaces act as buffers, softening the boundary between indoors and outdoors.

Atmosphere and Ambiance
