Located in the vibrant district of Mapo-gu, Seoul, NONSCALED Cafe by TCTC Architecture is a striking example of branded interior design, where architecture and identity merge through thoughtful materiality and color. Completed in 2023 and spanning 298 m², the café serves as both a functional coffee shop and an architectural statement, reflecting the design ethos of its operators—NONSCALED and its parent company, Academy Science.

A Brand-Driven Spatial Narrative

At the core of the design discussion with the client was the idea of a "Signature Color"—a visual element that could immediately resonate with the NONSCALED brand. Through several collaborative meetings, blue was selected as the primary branding color. This tone, close to a toned-down sky blue, strikes a balance between personality and subtlety, avoiding overwhelming saturation while delivering a recognizable and cohesive visual identity.

Circulation and Spatial Composition

Before addressing aesthetics, the team carefully mapped out the spatial circulation and zoning. The ground floor was designed to clearly separate the entrance lobby from the café zone while preserving a unified sightline that includes the coffee bar, outdoor garden, and seating areas. The second floor takes advantage of its elevated position with wide interior spans and panoramic green views, while maintaining an open, unobstructed line of sight. Elements that could interfere with this openness were intentionally omitted to prioritize clarity and breathability in the layout.

Material Palette and Modular Form

The material strategy centers around achromatic tones to ground the space and harmonize with the key blue accent. The design employs stainless steel with a vibration finish as the main finishing material, chosen for its textural depth and reflective quality. This choice ensures that the visual emphasis is shared across surfaces and not solely dominated by the color accent, enhancing visual balance and sensory depth.

The concept of modularity and joint articulation plays a crucial role in the design. Inspired by Academy Science’s background in plastic model production, the design reflects the "meji" (seam)—a subtle reference to the joints seen in assembled components. These design cues are subtly integrated into furniture, structural junctions, and detailing, allowing the architecture to tell a layered story of assembly, branding, and craftsmanship.

Signature Moments and Design Highlights

The chosen blue color is prominently featured on the central staircase, which serves as both a visual and spatial connector between floors. This bold application allows the brand identity to be visibly expressed from the exterior, reinforcing recognition. Additionally, the same blue hue is carried through the coffee bar’s upper cabinets, providing a cohesive design thread that runs through the space’s most utilized zones.

The layout of furniture, lighting, and finishes was thoughtfully orchestrated to promote diverse spatial experiences, with movement patterns guiding visitors through different zones while ensuring comfort, function, and aesthetic cohesion.
