A Sustainable and Inclusive Educational Space in Tultepec, Mexico

Nueva Creación Kindergarten, designed by Taller de Arquitectura Miguel Montor, is part of an ambitious urban improvement program in Tultepec, State of Mexico. This region, known for its pyrotechnic industry, was identified by the Secretariat of Agrarian, Territorial, and Urban Development (SEDATU) as an area in need of social and economic revitalization. The PMU Urban Improvement Program aimed to enhance community infrastructure while creating employment opportunities in the post-pandemic economic recovery period.

With a strong sociocultural and educational focus, the project was envisioned to provide a high-quality learning environment for early childhood education. Through strategic urban planning and architectural design, the kindergarten seeks to foster community engagement, social inclusion, and long-term adaptability.

Architectural Vision: Child-Centered and Flexible Design

Understanding that the built environment shapes early education, the design prioritizes sensory experiences, safety, and adaptability. The classrooms are intentionally non-rectangular, featuring rounded corners that create fluid spatial transitions. This design choice minimizes sharp edges, promoting a sense of security and comfort for young learners.

Natural lighting plays a crucial role in enhancing the learning experience. Strategically placed circular skylights allow zenithal light to diffuse evenly across the interiors, creating soft, immersive illumination that fosters a calm and focused atmosphere. The orientation of classrooms and integration of open spaces encourage interaction beyond enclosed areas, reinforcing the idea that learning extends outside the classroom.

Materiality and Sensory Stimulation

The project integrates natural and tactile materials that enhance the sensory experience of children. Exposed brick walls, designed with a specific textured finish, invite touch, stimulating tactile learning. The landscaping introduces a diverse plant palette, incorporating fragrant species to create an olfactory learning experience that enhances children's connection to their environment.

Each classroom is designed to be modular and adaptable, allowing for future reconfiguration based on evolving educational needs. The flexible layout ensures that the space can transform over time, serving various community purposes beyond its initial function.
