Located in the vibrant city of Porto Alegre, Brazil, the Oden Jiu-Jitsu Academy stands as a remarkable example of innovative gymnasium architecture. Designed by the talented team at 0E1 Arquitetos — led by Ana Cristina Castagna, Anna Carolina Manfroi, Gabriel Giambastiani, and Mario Guidoux — this academy was completed in 2022 and covers an expansive area of 2,691 square feet.

A Design Inspired by the Spirit and Ritual of Jiu-Jitsu

Commissioned to create an inclusive and diverse environment dedicated to the gentle art of Jiu-Jitsu, 0E1 Arquitetos crafted a space that goes beyond a conventional gym. The design thoughtfully translates the ritualistic and cultural aspects of Jiu-Jitsu into architectural form, creating a unique atmosphere that inspires practitioners of all skill levels.

At the heart of the academy's design is the innovative diffuse lighting system, known as “light walls.” These walls are constructed from translucent polycarbonate panels embedded with LED lighting, emitting soft, uniform illumination throughout the space. This thoughtful lighting creates an inviting and calming ambiance essential for both intense training sessions and moments of reflection.

Innovative Architectural Features

The light walls required a meticulous assembly process, incorporating vertical wooden studs spaced every 90 cm, enabling hidden internal LED installation. Two distinct opening designs complement the space:

  • A sliding polycarbonate door with a metal frame and integrated lighting for the tatami area. This door seamlessly merges with the light wall surface when closed.
  • Openings designed for changing rooms that encourage smooth movement and privacy.

These architectural elements allow the academy to balance functionality with aesthetic appeal while enhancing the user experience.

A Journey Through Light and Space

The academy's spatial journey is designed to evoke the spiritual progression of a Jiu-Jitsu practitioner:

  1. Entrance and Connection: Athletes enter through a transparent glass façade that visually connects the interior to the outside world.
  2. Ground Floor – Natural and Diffused Light: Moving alongside the tatami mats, practitioners are bathed in natural daylight supplemented by the diffuse glow of the light walls.
  3. Mezzanine – Introspection and Focus: As athletes ascend to the mezzanine level, lighting dims to foster concentration and introspection. Here, backlit polycarbonate panels enclose the changing rooms — a symbolic transformation space where visitors emerge ready as athletes.
  4. Return Path: Descending back to the tatami area, athletes pass behind the light wall and re-enter through the illuminated sliding door, completing the ritualistic spatial sequence.

Multi-Functional Training and Community Space

Designed for versatility, the academy accommodates simultaneous training sessions. The spacious ground floor supports large group classes, while the mezzanine offers intimate training or individual practice sessions. A cozy lounge area on the mezzanine encourages social interaction, relaxation, and community building — essential aspects of martial arts culture.

Celebrating Local Culture and Art

The walls throughout the academy serve as a dynamic gallery featuring works by local artists. This rotating exhibition program enriches the space with cultural significance and visual stimulation, reflecting the academy’s commitment to integrating community and creativity within its architecture.
