OHANA: A Vision for Resilient Architecture
Designing flood-resilient communities that foster family, sustainability, and togetherness—building the future of living.
Ohana, inspired by the Hawaiian concept of family, is a groundbreaking architectural project by Evan Fernandes, showcasing the power of design in fostering community and resilience. As the winner of the "Ohana" architectural competition, this project emphasizes flood-resilient neighborhood planning with a strong focus on family and togetherness.

The Core Principles of Ohana
Housing
The housing blocks, highlighted in red on the site plans, are positioned around the perimeter, forming a horizontal axis that facilitates ease of circulation. These blocks are designed to provide safe and comfortable family dwellings, creating a sense of security and belonging.
Connecting Paths
Interconnected paths weave through the site, fostering a sense of unity and resilience. These pathways lead to a central community garden and act as resilient elements designed to withstand flooding, enhancing connectivity and togetherness.
Community Needs
Central communal spaces include gardens, libraries, grocery stores, and medical facilities. These areas, highlighted in the plans, serve as vital hubs for interaction and engagement, uniting the community while promoting sustainability.

A Neighborhood Built to Last
Ground Floor Plan
The ground floor design prioritizes functionality with dedicated spaces for storage and flood resilience. Landscaped gardens and greenery create serene environments for people to interact and inhabit, blending nature with thoughtful design.

Second Floor Plan
Homes are arranged around central communal spaces, maximizing accessibility and community interaction. Each dwelling features thoughtful layouts that accommodate modern family needs while ensuring flood resilience.

Water Reuse System
The water filtration system employs permeable pavements to direct rainwater into homes and communal spaces. This innovative system highlights sustainable water management and resilience against flooding.

Visualizing Ohana
The architectural renders showcase lush greenery, glazed communal spaces, and interconnected pathways, all designed to evoke a sense of openness and transparency. This harmonious design fosters a family-oriented neighborhood, embodying the true essence of Ohana.
