A Contemporary Take on Korean Drinking Culture Through Modular Design and Urban Expression

Located in the vibrant neighborhood of Sindang, Seoul, pcmc Restaurant, designed by oftn studio, is a compact yet conceptually rich space that fuses Korean traditions with a distinctly modern edge. The name "pcmc" is an acronym for Pitching Machine, referencing both the kinetic energy of the design and the dynamic reinterpretation of Korean highball culture. More than just a dining venue, pcmc is envisioned as an evolving cultural platform inspired by street culture, graphic design, architecture, music, and contemporary art.

Occupying just 99 square meters, the restaurant’s interior is laid out in a rectangular configuration, strategically divided into group dining rooms, gender-specific restrooms, a service kitchen, and a central open-plan hall. The focal point of the space is an elongated bar-style table paired with an open kitchen, promoting interaction and transparency. This setup not only enhances the dining experience by showcasing the preparation of Korean highballs and dishes, but also simulates the intimate feel of being welcomed into someone’s home.

Modular Aesthetics and Collaborative Materiality

Materially, aluminum plays a central role in defining the restaurant’s identity. Applied as a modular system across walls and ceilings, it creates an adaptable environment that can host various collaborative functions—from hanging garments and art pieces to integrating branding elements. This approach establishes pcmc as a fluid, interactive canvas for future events, installations, and brand activations, ensuring spatial sustainability and relevance.

In a nod to industrial and urban textures, the architects opted for a minimalist palette of raw concrete, exposed metal, and warm wood. These materials were selected for their ability to age gracefully and develop character over time, contributing to the restaurant’s evolving narrative. The lighting strategy is equally flexible: magnetic rail lights embedded in the aluminum ceiling can be repositioned to adapt to shifting spatial needs and atmospheres, enhancing the overall architectural dynamism.

A Space Completed by People and Stories

Every detail—from the custom-built furniture made with consistent materials to the layered ceiling system—is curated to offer a cohesive and immersive environment. pcmc is not designed to impress when empty, but rather to come alive when animated by its users. The space celebrates the richness of human interaction, emphasizing that its true completion emerges through storytelling, shared meals, and cultural exchange.
