Perer Cabin by Arnau Vergés Tejero: A Thoughtful Transformation Rooted in Rural Memory
Perer Cabin transforms a rural structure into a poetic, sustainable home blending tradition, natural materials, and contemporary architectural design.
In the heart of the Catalan landscape, Perer Cabin by Arnau Vergés Tejero emerges as a quiet yet powerful architectural statement—one that honors memory, tradition, and material truth. This project is not merely a renovation but a resonant reinterpretation of rural heritage. It transforms a once-forgotten cabin into a modern home, while preserving the essence of its original identity.

Reimagining Vernacular Architecture
The architectural vision was to retain and amplify the symbolic presence of the original structure. Described as a “box that protects the precious treasure of memory,” the cabin was more than a shell—it was a poetic relic, with brick pillars suspended in time and a fading roof touched by snow.
Instead of replacing this fragile beauty, the design team worked with deliberate care to retain the building’s proportions, maintain the balance between solid and void, and reinforce the existing structural logic. The architectural language is deeply respectful of what came before.

A Home Shaped by Tradition and Necessity
The commission aimed to convert a traditional rural structure into a functional, contemporary residence, without losing its ancestral soul. The team embraced what was already there—the raw textures, the aged structure, the natural light—and reimagined it through honest materials and minimalist intervention.
Large glazed openings and covered porches now animate the social spaces, while latticed windows and subtle apertures lend intimacy to private areas like bedrooms and bathrooms. These elements bring in light and air, establishing a fluid connection with the surrounding landscape.

Material Authenticity and Craftsmanship
Materials play a central role in the transformation. With a focus on local craftsmanship and ecological sensitivity, the architects opted for lime mortars and volcanic clay—materials that resonate with the region’s construction traditions. These are used across both interior and exterior surfaces, creating continuity and tactile richness.
Handmade ceramic finishes, carefully selected and applied, contribute to the project’s integrity. Nothing here is superficial—every gesture serves both an aesthetic and a structural purpose.

Architecture as a Cultural Graft
Perer Cabin is more than a restored dwelling; it is an architectural graft—an insertion into the lineage of rural tradition. It arises from the belief that progress is not always linear. Sometimes, to move forward, architecture must look back—deep into the soil of necessity, humility, and craftsmanship.
The result is a timeless cabin home that exists in harmony with the land and the memory it holds. A place where contemporary design meets vernacular wisdom, and where old beams and new light cohabit gracefully.
