PG-01 Modular Apartment Building: A Breakthrough in Modular Housing Architecture
Reimagining modular housing with beehive-inspired design—PG-01 transforms urban living through sustainability, scalability, and smart space use.
The PG-01 modular apartment building presents a pioneering approach to modular housing architecture, inspired by the organic geometry of beehives. Designed by Maurice Samen, this shortlisted entry of the Plugin Housing Challenge reimagines how prefabricated living spaces can reshape the fabric of urban development, particularly in response to rapid urbanization and rising demands for sustainable and scalable housing solutions.
Strategically located in the residential neighborhood of Islington, London, the 376.53 square meter site was selected due to its proximity to areas facing acute housing shortages, as recognized by public authorities. The PG-01 concept directly responds to these urban challenges, offering a solution that is not only rapid in construction but also adaptable to evolving demographic and spatial needs.

At the heart of the concept lies a modular hexagonal design system. In contrast to the rigidity of conventional rectangular modules, PG-01 uses irregular hexagonal units stretched horizontally—an aesthetic and functional innovation that optimizes spatial use while also ensuring visual distinction. These modules are manufactured offsite in controlled factory settings and then assembled onsite, drastically reducing construction timelines, minimizing environmental impact, and ensuring consistent build quality.
Each modular unit measures approximately 4.2 meters in height and 7.65 meters in length, forming the building blocks for an array of flexible housing options. From compact single-occupancy units to more spacious double-occupancy modules, the design caters to diverse urban residents. Internally, these units are equipped with all essential facilities, including open-plan living areas, kitchens, bathrooms, and thoughtfully positioned sleeping quarters. Vertical and horizontal connections between modules are made seamless with staircases, corridors, and elevator access points that enhance user circulation and safety.
The architectural layout goes beyond residential needs to promote community engagement and ecological sensitivity. Shared features include:
- A centrally placed green courtyard, encouraging social interaction and mental well-being
- A subterranean parking lot accommodating 20 vehicles, optimizing land use
- Ground-level commercial units that activate the streetscape and add financial sustainability
- Integrated sustainable systems for water supply, greywater recycling, and thermal efficiency via modular conduits

From the dynamic honeycomb façade to its integrative design philosophy, PG-01 embodies the next generation of adaptive housing. It merges architectural beauty with practical function—creating not only shelter but also fostering a sense of identity, belonging, and urban continuity.
Ultimately, the PG-01 modular apartment building is more than just a design solution; it is a blueprint for future-ready urban living. Its replicability, efficiency, and capacity for customization make it a vital contribution to the evolution of modular innovation in architecture.
