Nestled in the serene Demänovská Valley of Slovakia, Residence Demänovská by Pokorny Architekti is a masterful reinterpretation of the traditional mountain cabin typology. Inspired by the historical evolution of mountain retreats, the residence transforms the concept of a simple shelter into a luxurious sanctuary that reconnects its inhabitants with nature and inner tranquility.

The design process, spanning two years of careful planning and multiple iterations, reflects a deep collaboration between the architects and clients, resulting in a home that balances architectural innovation with respect for the surrounding forested environment. Set along the banks of the Demänovka stream, the site originally hosted a log cabin from the late 1980s. Guided by genius loci and a desire for sensitive integration, the new structure employs prefabricated timber construction, ensuring minimal environmental impact while maintaining a strong connection to its natural context.

Harmonious Design with Nature

The residence is a prism-like form discreetly nestled among mature trees, running parallel to the stream. This alignment makes the constantly changing presence of water the central feature of the main living space, enhanced by floor-to-ceiling frameless glazing. The same principle applies to the three upstairs bedrooms, each with en-suite bathrooms, providing panoramic views of the forest and stream while preserving privacy and serenity.

The rooftop terrace with a hot tub introduces an "inverted landscape," where sloping bedroom roofs create sheltered relaxation zones. This design strategy maximizes privacy, even with nearby cabins, while offering unobstructed vertical views of the sky framed by treetops.

Materiality and Craftsmanship

Exterior timber cladding is treated with the traditional Japanese Yakisugi technique, a controlled charring process that enhances durability, fire resistance, and weather protection while giving the residence its distinctive deep matte black finish. Inside, the design emphasizes natural materials and minimalism, featuring timber veneers on walls and ceilings, and microcement flooring in living areas and bathrooms. A restrained furniture palette prioritizes comfort, atmosphere, and refined elegance over excess, creating an immersive environment that resonates with the landscape outside.
