A Modern Interpretation of Central Texas Vernacular

The Roam Ranch House, designed by Baldridge Architects, is a 4,362-square-foot single-family residence located on a working ranch just outside Fredericksburg, Texas. The home seamlessly blends modern architecture with the traditional Central Texas ranch vernacular, creating a unique dialogue between contemporary design and historical rural forms. The residence showcases a thoughtful balance of form, materiality, and functionality, embodying the spirit of the land while offering modern comfort and sophistication.

Design Concept: Function Meets Tradition

The clients, who previously commissioned the firm for a modern home in Austin, sought a retreat from city life during the pandemic. They desired a home that would not only serve as a family residence but also accommodate their sustainable ranch operations, including raising bison and turkeys under the brand “Force of Nature,” as well as hosting podcasts and educational events.

The brief emphasized the retention of the ranch’s authentic character while integrating modern amenities and design flourishes. Two preexisting structures—a kitchen/dining building and a detached single-bedroom volume—were preserved and thoughtfully integrated into the new plan.

Architectural Layout and Spatial Planning

The Roam Ranch House maintains a clear conceptual logic, with distinct volumes—bedrooms, carport, kitchen, offices, great room, and gym—under a single unifying roof gesture. This design evokes the traditional dog-trot ranch typology, characterized by open circulation and natural ventilation, while incorporating modern engineering solutions.

One of the most striking features is the corrugated polycarbonate roofing, which matches the existing roof to create a cohesive entrance and carport while introducing natural light into the interior spaces. The combination of these volumes fosters a sense of openness, while preserving privacy and functional zoning for both residential and business activities.

Materials and Craftsmanship

The material palette celebrates both authenticity and refinement. Raw stone hearths are detailed with precision, allowing the floor to slide beneath with a minimal 1/4” reveal. The clever integration of flitched wood and steel provides invisible support for cantilevered sections, balancing structural rigor with visual lightness.

Other materials and manufacturers include Big Ass Fans, BLUDOT, Basaltina stone, Benjamin Moore finishes, Cle Tile, Kohler, Living Roc, Marvin windows, Minka lighting, Newbold Concrete, Subzero appliances, Toto fixtures, Weather Shield, Western States Metal Roofing, and Windsor doors. These choices ensure durability, elegance, and a tactile connection to the ranch landscape.

Living with the Land

The home was designed with practical living in mind, as the clients needed to inhabit the property throughout construction, even with a newborn in tow. Despite these logistical challenges, the final architecture appears seamless, elegant, and fully resolved, demonstrating how thoughtful design can address complex real-world constraints.

Outdoor Integration

The house’s design carefully considers the surrounding ranch environment. Landscaped by Campbell Landscape Architecture, outdoor spaces connect visually and physically with the interior, allowing for fluid indoor-outdoor living that is essential to the Central Texas lifestyle.

The Roam Ranch House exemplifies how modern architecture can honor regional traditions while addressing contemporary needs. It is a home that embodies both residential comfort and functional versatility, all within a ranch context. Through careful attention to materials, spatial organization, and craftsmanship, Baldridge Architects have created a modern Texas ranch that feels authentic, grounded, and enduring.
