SARDENYA 356 Apartments by Atienza Maure Arquitectos: Modern Mediterranean Living in Barcelona
SARDENYA 356 Apartments in Barcelona feature Mediterranean-inspired façades, motorized wooden shutters, floor-to-ceiling windows, sustainable design, natural light, and open, modern interiors.
Nestled in the vibrant Eixample district of Barcelona, SARDENYA 356 Apartments by Atienza Maure Arquitectos redefines urban residential design with a seamless blend of Mediterranean climate responsiveness, transparency, and contemporary aesthetics. Constructed on a narrow infill plot between party walls, the project spans 1,275 m² and was completed in 2022, offering innovative spatial solutions while maintaining respect for the surrounding historical fabric.

Context and Urban Integration
The site’s constrained conditions, adjacent to the corner of Sardenya and Còrsega streets but without block patio access, presented a design challenge. The architects aimed to create a façade that maximizes light, air, and visual connection while shielding residents from the busy street and harsh sun. Drawing inspiration from iconic local precedents by Mitjans, Coderch, and Bofill, as well as the practical simplicity of Eixample’s rear façades, the design celebrates both functional efficiency and understated elegance.

Materiality and Design Concept
The building interprets the traditional Mediterranean approach to façades, using glazed galleries complemented by motorized wooden shutters that fold seamlessly into aluminum frames. This system transforms into continuous balconies when open, merging indoor and outdoor spaces and enhancing natural ventilation and daylight. By choosing commercially available pine shutters, maintenance remains simple and cost-effective, ensuring long-term durability.
Floor-to-ceiling aluminum windows establish openness and flexibility, creating dynamic summer and winter garden spaces. Interiors feature polished concrete floors and exposed slab ceilings, emphasizing material honesty and minimalist aesthetics. Ground-floor duplexes include private gardens, shielded from the street by sliding pine lattices, while upper-level units offer customizable privacy and abundant light.

Climate Responsiveness and Sustainability
The project employs a vernacular climatic strategy: wooden shutters deliver cool interiors during Barcelona’s intense summers and maximize daylight and passive solar gain in mild winters. This simple yet highly effective system enhances indoor comfort naturally, reducing energy demand while creating a friendly, human-centered living environment.
SARDENYA 356 Apartments exemplifies modern urban Mediterranean architecture: where historical reference, material authenticity, and sustainable living converge in a contemporary residential context.
