SCC: Sendagaya Community Center by Kengo Kuma & Associates: Innovative Community Architecture in Japan
SCC-Sendagaya Community Center by Kengo Kuma blends circular design, natural light, airflow, and adaptable spaces for vibrant community engagement.
The SCC, Sendagaya Community Center, designed by Kengo Kuma & Associates, represents a forward-thinking approach to mixed-use architecture and public community spaces. Completed in 2024, this 2,607 m² facility in the heart of Jingumae, Tokyo, blends commercial and communal functions while emphasizing natural light, airflow, and spatial openness.

Harmonizing Community and Urban Density
Situated in a densely built-up area where residential and commercial structures coexist, the Sendagaya Community Center addresses the challenges of urban integration. The architects employed a series of circular marble slabs that create generous gaps between the building and adjacent properties. This design allows maximum daylight penetration and natural ventilation, enhancing the comfort of visitors while fostering a sense of openness rarely seen in traditional public architecture.

Atrium as a Central Connection
At the heart of the building lies a soaring atrium extending from the first floor to the rooftop. This vertical void channels both light and wind throughout the facility, promoting energy efficiency while connecting the building’s diverse functions. Visitors experience a seamless circulation, as the atrium visually and physically links community areas, event spaces, and commercial zones across multiple levels.

Circular Design Language
Inside, the SCC employs an innovative circular motif. From floor panels and windows to furniture, signage, and curtains, circular elements of varying materials and scales create a soft, inviting environment. This design strategy transforms rigid public architecture into a malleable and adaptable space, encouraging interaction and flexibility while redefining what a modern community center can be.

Collaborative Engineering and Sustainability
The building’s structural engineering was handled by Ejiri Structural Engineers, with facility engineering by P.T. Morimura & Associates. Together, the design and engineering teams ensured the building not only meets functional requirements but also promotes sustainability and resilience in an urban context.

A New Vision for Public Buildings
The SCC, Sendagaya Community Center challenges the traditional notion of enclosed, inflexible public facilities. By emphasizing openness, natural ventilation, and adaptable spaces, Kengo Kuma & Associates present a community-centered architectural model that seamlessly integrates into Tokyo’s urban fabric while serving residents, workers, and visitors alike.
