SIGMA Space by ONOAA STUDIO, Shanghai, China
A minimalist retail space blending craftsmanship, transparency, and precision, where lenses, materials, and light create a calm, immersive brand experience.
SIGMA Space, designed by ONOAA STUDIO in Shanghai, is a refined retail and exhibition environment that translates the philosophy of the SIGMA brand into architectural form. Inspired by the poetic idea of production “like water through a river,” the project embodies continuity, precision, and calmness, qualities deeply rooted in the brand’s manufacturing culture in Aizu, Japan.

Located adjacent to both a शांत garden and the dynamic urban fabric of Shanghai, the space negotiates between stillness and movement. ONOAA STUDIO approaches the design as an immersive narrative, structuring the interior into three interconnected chapters: “The Ways of Being” (Reception), “The Ways of Crafting” (Display), and “The Ways of Seeing” (Gallery). These zones flow seamlessly into one another, guiding visitors through a layered understanding of SIGMA’s identity: its craftsmanship, technology, and artistic vision.

The reception area introduces a key concept of transparency. A glass-enclosed service room allows visitors to observe technicians repairing cameras and lenses in real time. This open interface dissolves the boundary between brand and user, transforming maintenance into a visible and valued part of the experience. The surrounding walls are composed of a precise grid of storage drawers, reflecting the meticulous organization of components and the discipline of the production process.

Moving into the display zone, the space is defined by a striking lens wall, a monumental installation that presents SIGMA’s products in a highly ordered arrangement. Rising from floor to ceiling, the display emphasizes precision and continuity. ONOAA STUDIO developed a custom triangular column system to support the lenses, carefully calibrated to accommodate different specifications while maintaining visual consistency.

At the center of this space sits a circular island table, carved from a single block of limestone. Embedded with fossils and natural traces, the stone introduces a sense of time and permanence, contrasting with the technological precision of the products. This juxtaposition creates a tactile and contemplative moment within the otherwise highly controlled environment.

The gallery space, or “The Ways of Seeing,” is designed as a calm and immersive exhibition environment. Walls clad with acoustic materials by Kvadrat ensure both visual continuity and sound absorption, creating a quiet atmosphere conducive to reflection. Here, the focus shifts from product to perception, aligning with SIGMA’s philosophy that photography transcends technology and enters the realm of art.

Materiality throughout the project is restrained yet expressive. Wood, glass, stone, and soft acoustic surfaces are combined to create a balanced environment that feels both warm and precise. The palette reflects a harmony between natural and engineered elements, reinforcing the brand’s identity.

Lighting and environmental control are carefully integrated. On the north façade, a flexible shading system regulates daylight, adapting to seasonal changes while maintaining optimal conditions for exhibitions. This responsiveness enhances both user comfort and energy efficiency.

Ultimately, SIGMA Space is more than a retail store, it is a spatial manifesto. It communicates the brand’s ethos through clarity, material honesty, and experiential sequencing. By merging transparency, craftsmanship, and minimalism, ONOAA STUDIO creates a space that not only showcases products but also expresses the deeper values behind them.
