Six Senses Southern Dunes Resort, Saudi Arabia
Desert resort by Foster + Partners blends dune-inspired architecture, sustainable design, luxury villas, wellness spaces, and views in Saudi Arabia.
Set within the dramatic desert landscape of Umluj, Six Senses Southern Dunes Resort is a landmark hospitality project designed by Foster + Partners. Located a short distance inland from the Red Sea coast, the resort forms a key destination within Saudi Arabia’s ambitious Red Sea masterplan, celebrating the meeting point of dunes and mountains while establishing a new benchmark for sustainable luxury tourism in the region.

Desert-Inspired Hospitality Architecture
The architectural concept draws deeply from the surrounding terrain, translating the fluidity of sand dunes and the lightness of traditional Bedouin tents into contemporary forms. The resort’s entrance is defined by a striking flower-shaped canopy that shelters a lush desert oasis. Wrapped in lightweight, rope-clad petals, this structure provides shade, promotes natural cooling, and creates a powerful visual identity that responds directly to the harsh desert climate.

Planted with native desert flora, the arrival sequence enhances biodiversity while reinforcing a strong connection between architecture and landscape. From this central oasis, guests are guided toward panoramic views of the valley, mountains, and expansive desert beyond, establishing an immediate sense of place rooted in Saudi Arabia’s natural heritage.

Spatial Organization and Guest Experience
Luxury guest rooms are positioned along the valley edge, carefully oriented to maximize views while minimizing environmental disturbance. Floor-to-ceiling openings frame the desert scenery, blurring the boundary between interior comfort and the vast outdoor landscape. Interior spaces, designed by Muza Lab, reflect a calm, tactile palette inspired by sand, stone, and earth tones, reinforcing a serene atmosphere throughout the resort.

Complementing the main hotel facilities are 40 private mountain villas, discreetly distributed across the site. Their undulating roof forms echo the movement of surrounding dunes, allowing the architecture to visually dissolve into the terrain. This sensitive placement respects existing topography while ensuring privacy and immersion within the desert environment.

Wellness, Leisure, and Cultural Identity
At the heart of the resort’s hospitality offering is a strong focus on wellness, cultural authenticity, and sensory experience. The spa is positioned to overlook a tranquil valley, offering traditional treatments accompanied by expansive views of the mountains. Shaded pool areas create a protected oasis from intense sunlight while maintaining uninterrupted visual connections to the surrounding dunes.
Speciality restaurants are located at the site’s highest point, transforming dining into a sunset-focused experience that celebrates the desert’s changing light conditions. Culinary concepts emphasize local ingredients, regional flavors, and Saudi traditions, reinforcing the resort’s commitment to cultural continuity and place-based luxury.

Sustainable Design and Environmental Responsibility
Sustainability is a core driver of the project, aligning with the broader Red Sea development vision to preserve and enhance the region’s fragile ecosystem. Buildings are carefully sited to reduce land disturbance, while lightweight construction strategies minimize material use and environmental impact. Native landscaping strategies further support biodiversity, water conservation, and long-term ecological resilience.
Engineering and environmental performance were developed in collaboration with Stantec Consultants, ensuring that the resort meets the highest international standards for sustainable hospitality architecture. Shading devices, passive cooling strategies, and optimized building orientation collectively reduce energy demand while enhancing guest comfort.

A New Benchmark for Desert Resort Design
Six Senses Southern Dunes Resort represents a refined synthesis of contemporary architecture, environmental stewardship, and cultural sensitivity. By embedding luxury hospitality within the rhythms of the desert landscape, Foster + Partners have created a destination that feels both timeless and forward-looking. The project sets a new precedent for sustainable resort architecture in Saudi Arabia, redefining how large-scale tourism developments can coexist harmoniously with sensitive natural environments.
