Sjöparken Retreat: A Lakeside Haven of Nordic Minimalism and Japanese Serenity by NORM Architects

Sjöparken Retreat stands as a remarkable example of contemporary wellness architecture, an immersive sanctuary that merges the serenity of Swedish nature with the refined simplicity of Nordic and Japanese design philosophies. Conceived by NORM Architects and completed in 2023, this lakeside destination in Halland, Sweden redefines luxury hospitality through a deep appreciation of landscape, sensory experience, and architectural harmony.

A Sanctuary Rooted in Place and Tradition

Sjöparken Retreat is located within the peaceful beech forests of Halland, forming a seamless extension of the landscape that surrounds it. More than a simple hotel expansion for Ästad Vingård, the project is envisioned as a carefully crafted environment where architecture enhances wellbeing and elevates the rituals of everyday life.

the retreat becomes a unique architectural hybrid, connecting global aesthetics while remaining deeply rooted in the Swedish context.

Every structure reflects the genius loci of the site, honoring local building traditions through the use of wooden cladding, green roofs, and understated forms that appear to float gently on the lake.

A Floating Village of Seven Lakeside Villas

The retreat is arranged as a small floating village composed of seven villas, each elevated gently above the water. Every villa contains four hotel rooms linked through glazed corridors, giving guests the feeling of meandering through an open-air settlement rather than a traditional hospitality complex.

This approach pays homage to the site’s history, evoking rustic fishing huts and wooden piers while introducing a refined, contemporary spatial language. The fully glazed pathways blur interior and exterior, creating a constant dialogue with the landscape.

Immersive Wellness Through Architecture

Sjöparken Retreat elevates wellness through architectural intention. Each room is designed as a peaceful refuge where guests can fully engage with the natural surroundings.

Key sensory experiences include:

• Private bathing jetties for serene lake dips
• In-room saunas positioned at the water’s edge
• Large panoramic windows framing shifting light and reflections
• Natural materials such as oakwood, stone, textiles, and ceramics
• Filtered daylight through wooden louvers and soft drapery

These design gestures create an environment of tranquility and warm minimalism, where every detail is crafted to heighten the experience of rest, rejuvenation, and connection to nature.

Masterful Use of Light, Shadow, and Materiality

Light plays a central role throughout the retreat. Wooden louvers divide spaces softly, allowing privacy while transforming daylight into moving patterns on walls and ceilings. As the sun shifts, the rooms evolve, creating a poetic interplay of contrast, warmth, and shadow.

The interiors prioritize sensory comfort over ornamentation. Dolomite-plaster ceilings, textured fabrics, tactile stone surfaces, and warm timber cladding generate a calm visual rhythm. Lighting design by Anker&Co complements natural light subtly, ensuring artificial illumination never competes with the beauty of the outdoors.

The Sauna as a Journey of Light and Darkness

One of the retreat’s most striking spaces is the intimate sauna crafted entirely in wood and positioned directly at the lake’s edge. Guests move from the warm, bright sauna into a darker stone-lined bathing area illuminated by a dramatic skylight, an experience reminiscent of chiaroscuro.

This transition heightens the ritual of moving between heat, water, and stone, making wellness a spatial journey rather than an isolated amenity.

Concealed doors and integrated storage maintain a seamless aesthetic throughout, allowing even small spaces to feel uncluttered, refined, and intentional.

A Fusion of Nordic, Japanese, and Tropical Typologies

The architecture draws from multiple cultural influences while maintaining a distinct Nordic identity. References include:

• Fishing huts and wooden piers along Swedish lakes
• Glass walkways inspired by the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art
• Japanese engawa-like transitional spaces with columns, louvers, and reflective pools
• Tropical resort water villas reinterpreted through Scandinavian simplicity

The result is a new typology: a hybrid lakeside retreat that blends tradition and modernity, intimacy and openness, comfort and nature.
