Sola Church, designed by JAJA Architects, stands as a new cultural and spiritual landmark in the heart of Sola, Norway. Completed in 2021, this 1,600-square-meter church goes beyond its religious function, reimagining the role of a church as a vibrant civic space at the intersection of architecture, light, and urban integration.

A Civic and Sacred Anchor in Sola’s Urban Fabric

Positioned at the end of the main street, opposite the town hall, Sola Church plays a central role in redefining the identity of the town center. It is the first church built directly within the heart of Sola, not only offering a space for worship but also fostering social engagement. The building acts as a connector between the town’s administrative and public life, creating a plaza shared by both the municipality and the congregation.

This plaza is not merely a forecourt — it’s a spatial extension of the main street, framing a continuous green backdrop and forming a civic gesture that invites both believers and visitors into its welcoming realm. The integration of church and urban life is seamless, bringing a new rhythm and life to the town’s core.

Architectural Form and Function

The church is composed of a concrete base topped with two wood-clad volumes, anchoring it solidly to the landscape while expressing a warm, tactile character. The larger of these volumes, the nave, asserts a strong presence facing the town center. The south-facing gable, subtly transparent and crafted with intention, introduces a gentle rhythm of light and shadow during the day — and transforms into a luminous lantern-like landmark at night, guiding townspeople and visitors alike.

The formal gesture is both grounded and uplifting: the use of local materials and minimal ornamentation allows the spiritual qualities of the space to emerge naturally through light, proportion, and atmosphere.

Sacred Interior and Light

Inside, the nave is symmetrically organized, designed to foster a calm, contemplative atmosphere. Its north wall features a sequence of louvered windows that filter in diffused northern light, enhancing the interior’s sense of depth and direction. This spatial choreography of light evokes a sense of sacred stillness, offering worshippers a space of reflection and spiritual connection.

The roofline integrates stained-glass windows, also created in collaboration with artist Marie Buskov, allowing colored light to dance across the interior surfaces throughout the day. These nuanced light effects animate the white surfaces of the nave with a poetic and ever-changing ambiance, turning natural light into a form of decoration and storytelling.

At the end of the nave, behind the altar, an artwork by Marie Buskov stands as a spiritual focal point, giving the church its unique identity. This integration of contemporary art into the architectural narrative elevates the space from a functional gathering room to a multisensory, sacred environment.

An Urban Lighthouse and Cultural Landmark

More than a place of worship, Sola Church is envisioned as an urban lighthouse. At night, its illuminated façade becomes a glowing beacon within the town, continuing its civic presence beyond daylight hours. It symbolizes openness and belonging, becoming a constant reminder of community and shared values.

In every detail — from its respectful integration into the urban fabric to its sublime treatment of light and material — JAJA Architects have created not only a religious space but also a new typology for community-oriented sacred architecture in contemporary Norway.
