Stalk Tree-Hugger Bar by RAD+ar: A Fusion of Architecture and Nature in Jakarta
Stalk Tree-Hugger Bar in Jakarta merges nature and architecture using parametric design, tensile structures, and sustainable materials for an immersive experience.
Jakarta’s bustling business district is now home to an architectural marvel that seamlessly blends nature with modern commercial design. The Stalk Tree-Hugger Bar, designed by RAD+ar (Research Artistic Design + Architecture), is a testament to sustainable architecture and minimal environmental intervention.

A Bar That Embraces Nature
Located in the heart of Jakarta, this innovative hospitality project integrates five towering 30-meter trees into its design, wrapping them in a dynamic interplay of light and shadow. The architects sought to challenge conventional spatial experiences by using a parametric tensile structure, allowing nature to dictate the form rather than the other way around.
The concept revolves around biophilic design, where tensile fabric creates a fluid enclosure, offering visitors a constantly evolving atmosphere influenced by natural elements such as wind and sunlight. The result is a multi-functional commercial space that merges nature with modern urban architecture.

Design Philosophy: Shadows, Light, and Movement
Inspired by the movement of trees and the patterns they cast, RAD+ar envisioned an ever-changing environment that allows guests to experience the dynamics of natural light and shade. By using tensile structures as a reversed shadow, the bar creates an immersive and organic atmosphere that changes throughout the day. As the wind moves the trees, it also shifts the patterns within the space, making the experience both architectural and sensory.

Seamless Integration of Sustainability
Sustainability is at the core of Stalk Tree-Hugger Bar. The structure is supported by a light steel-timber thatch roof, which not only provides shading for the glass façade but also anchors the parametric tensile canopy. This roof serves multiple purposes:
- Energy Efficiency: Acts as a thermal buffer, reducing heat gain inside the space.
- Aesthetic Integration: Functions as a sculptural element that enhances the overall cityscape.
- Nighttime Ambiance: Transforms into a lantern-like structure, contributing to Jakarta’s vibrant nightlife scene.

A Unique Spatial Experience
The entrance to the Stalk Tree-Hugger Bar is intentionally hidden behind vertical plant walls, offering visitors an immersive journey. Guests first pass through a narrow green foyer before ascending to the 750-square-meter upper bar and restaurant, where they dine among the trees. This layered transition reinforces the connection between built form and nature, making the experience both intimate and theatrical.

Minimal Intervention, Maximum Impact
Led by Antonius Richard, RAD+ar continues to push the boundaries of sustainable commercial architecture. The Stalk Tree-Hugger Bar is an experimental prototype showcasing how commercial spaces can coexist harmoniously with nature without sacrificing their economic value.
By utilizing minimum natural intervention, the project demonstrates how contemporary architecture can embrace adaptive reuse, green integration, and sustainable material choices. This approach sets a precedent for future urban developments in Indonesia, advocating for a decentralized, nature-driven approach to commercial architecture.
