Swamp Capsule Camp: A Model for Sustainable Architecture in Wetlands
Eco-friendly prefab camp for kids that blends sustainable architecture with nature, education, and conservation in wetland landscapes.
Swamp Capsule Camp is a visionary proposal for a children’s educational camp located within the Tame Valley Wetlands. Designed by Milena Markovic and recognized as a runner-up entry in the WIC competition, the project rethinks the intersection of education, sustainability, and architecture. This initiative not only promotes ecological awareness among children but also showcases the principles of sustainable architecture in sensitive ecological zones.

A Disappearing Camp Concept
The project began with the idea of a disappearing camp—where structures could be assembled and disassembled on site, leaving the natural surroundings untouched. Though the original concept considered mobile architecture for all users, it was later refined to reserve mobility for camp rangers, while maintaining fixed prefabricated structures for campers. The ultimate goal: to minimize the human footprint and create a built environment that merges with nature rather than displacing it.
Design Philosophy: Returning Home to Nature
Inspired by memories of countryside retreats and mountain homes, the design seeks to evoke a deep sense of belonging and warmth. The layout is centered around a communal campfire, with housing density decreasing as one moves outward, mimicking the organic formation of mountain villages. The further you go from the center, the more you are immersed in the landscape, achieving a deeper harmony with nature—a core principle of sustainable architecture.
Site Development and Phases
Phase 1 introduces the primary camping zone, organized into concentric circles that guide the spatial layout. Phase 2 acts as a natural continuation, introducing wooden trails and platforms that extend into the wetlands. This low-impact expansion honors the topography and ecology of the site, allowing users to engage with nature without disrupting it.

Adaptive and Multifunctional Space Use
Understanding that architecture in a camping environment is inherently adaptive, the design anticipates user reinterpretation. Campers repurpose meadows as sports fields, use logs as benches, and turn capsules into community hubs. This flexibility embraces the unpredictability of human behavior, making the architecture a true partner in the experience rather than a rigid framework.
Sustainable Strategies
The camp integrates several eco-conscious systems:
- Prefabricated Capsules: All housing units are 100% prefabricated, minimizing onsite construction waste and allowing reuse in different contexts.
- Rainwater Harvesting: Gutters collect rainwater for reuse in capsules, while surplus water is directed to wetland zones to sustain the ecosystem.
- Wind Energy: Small wind turbines power individual capsules, ideal for the exposed meadow environment of the site.
- Reedbed Waste Recycling: Constructed reedbeds process wastewater naturally, turning waste into a resource and protecting the local wetland biome.
Swamp Capsule Camp presents an inspiring example of sustainable architecture for educational and ecological purposes. Rooted in modular design, eco-friendly technologies, and environmental stewardship, it fosters a deeper relationship between people and place. Through its flexible, resilient approach, it serves as a model for future architecture in protected and ecologically delicate areas.
