After four years of construction, Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG)'s latest project, CapitaSpring, is now complete. The 919-foot biophilic skyscraper is located in Downtown Core, Singapore's financial district, and is one of the tallest buildings in the city-state. The tower is the latest addition to the island's skyline.

93,000 m2 (100,1044 sf) is the total site area while the landscaped area is 1.4 times that, according to the green plot ratio (GPR), which is a measure developed by Singapore-based landscape architect Dr. Ong Boon Lay. It's a scientific way to introduce greenery into urbanism.

The high-rise building is defined by a dynamic interplay of orthogonal lines, lush greenery, and contrasting textures. At multiple elevations, the vertical elements comprising the building's facade are pulled apart to allow glimpses of the greenery blooming from the base, core, and rooftop "sky garden."

CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati teamed up with BIG to create a digital user experience for the building.

"When we got invited to join the architectural competition, we saw it as a great opportunity to team up with BIG and achieve something truly unique and bold. As CapitaSpring is open to the public today, I am proud of how we enhanced the public spaces across the building, creating the best experience for all users and leveraging both technology and unprecedented integration with natural elements."

According to the press release, the 51-story mixed-use complex - which includes residential, office, and retail space - is almost entirely spoken for. The complex offers plenty of amenities for those who will be living there, including a swimming pool, jacuzzi, jogging track, gymnasium, social kitchen, residents’ lounge, and barbecue pits. The top 29 floors are set aside for offices.

The "Green Oasis" is a 35-meter (115-foot) open-air garden located in the core of the building, between the offices and residences. This space is perfect for work, relaxation, exercise, and events. The plants in the Green Oasis are arranged in layers that mimic the plant hierarchy of tropical rainforests. This means that the plants closest to the ground will have the longest leaves, while the plants closer to the light will have shorter leaves. Shade-tolerant plants with large leaves grow on the rainforest floor because they need less direct sunlight than plants higher up. The canopy layer is the roof of the rainforest, where trees are planted close together because of their smaller leaf structure.

“When we were approached to design a building in Singapore, we knew that we wanted to create something that would be a unique and exciting exploration of tropical urbanism. With over 80,000 plants within and around the building, the total landscaped area reaches just under 90,000 square feet. CapitaSpring is like a vision of a future in which city and countryside, culture and nature can coexist, and urban landscapes can expand unrestricted into the vertical dimension.
- Bjarke Ingels, founding partner at BIG.

The Building and Construction Authority of Singapore has awarded CapitaSpring Green Mark Platinum & Universal Design Gold Plus certifications. In addition to the immense greenery, the tower includes many amenities that support Singapore’s Green Plan 2030, including 165 bicycle lots and a 1,969-foot cycling path around the building’s perimeter. These features make CapitaSpring an exemplary project when it comes to sustainable design and green living in Singapore!

Other collaborators on the project are Carlo Ratti Associati, RSP Architects Planners & Engineers (Pte) Ltd, ARUP Singapore Pte Ltd, Beca Carter Hollings & Ferner (S.E.Asia) Pte Ltd, Arcadis Singapore Pte Ltd, COEN Design International Pte Ltd, Takenouchi Webb Pte Ltd, Nipek Pte Ltd, Asylum Creative Ptd Ltd, Jacobs International Consultants Pte Ltd, Ignesis Consultants Pte Ltd, PH Consulting Pte Ltd, TSM Consultancy Pte Ltd, Dragages Singapore Pte Ltd, Meinhardt Singapore Pte Ltd, and Squire Mech Pte Ltd. The development was designed and built for CapitaLand Development, CapitaLand Integrated Commercial Trust, and Mitsubishi Estate Co., Ltd.
