Set amid the rolling farmlands on the outskirts of Bengaluru, The Quarry House is a striking example of contemporary residential architecture that seamlessly merges structural innovation, landscape integration, and sensory living. Designed in 2023 by Crest Architects, this 4,580-square-foot family residence reinterprets modern Indian housing through raw materiality, expressive cantilevers, and a deep connection to nature.

Contextual Architecture Rooted in Landscape

Located far from Bengaluru’s urban density, the house sits on a generous 6,650-square-foot plot surrounded by tropical greenery. Despite the expansive site, the design was shaped by strict Vaastu principles and adherence to the traditional Aaya footprint, limiting the ground floor to just 2,500 square feet. This constraint became a catalyst for innovation, inspiring a vertically layered residence defined by dramatic overhangs and carefully articulated masses.

The most striking feature is the bold 18-foot cantilever, which visually anchors the house while creating shaded outdoor zones and covered parking beneath. These hovering volumes frame curated views of the surrounding landscape, reinforcing a constant visual dialogue between interior and exterior spaces.

Material Expression and the Meaning of “Quarry”

The architectural identity of the house is defined by its honest expression of materials. Exposed concrete, raw stone, and textured finishes dominate both the exterior and interior, giving rise to the name “Quarry House.” These materials are not decorative but integral to the building’s structural and spatial logic, aging gracefully while grounding the home within its natural context.

Stone pathways, stepped platforms, and a lush garden landscape blur the boundary between built form and nature. A tranquil water body positioned in the northeast enhances microclimatic comfort while adding a meditative quality to the site.

Light, Space, and Sensory Experience

Internally, the house unfolds as an open-plan residence designed to feel expansive despite footprint restrictions. Strategically placed skylights introduce abundant natural light, allowing residents to experience the passage of time, shifting shadows, and seasonal changes throughout the day.

At the heart of the home stands a sculptural metal staircase, cantilevered from a suspended concrete wall. More than a circulation element, this staircase acts as a spatial divider between living and dining areas while maintaining visual continuity. Its dramatic presence emphasizes vertical movement and enhances the architectural narrative of lightness and balance.

Ground Floor: Community and Contemplation

The ground level accommodates formal and semi-formal living areas along with a TV lounge, all oriented to maximize views and ventilation. One of the most distinctive spaces is the puja room, delicately floating above a water body. Enclosed by concrete walls and illuminated from above, this serene sanctuary fosters spiritual reflection. A sliding partition allows the puja room to merge with the formal living space, offering flexibility while preserving spatial harmony.

Private Realms Above

The first floor houses three bedrooms, each opening onto a private balcony with panoramic views of the farmland and gardens. This design enhances privacy while reinforcing a strong connection to the outdoors. The master bedroom is calm and understated, emphasizing material quality and functionality, while glazed partitions allow light to filter deep into the interior.

The guest bedroom, defined by its exposed concrete shell, forms the iconic 18-foot cantilever and doubles as a canopy for parking below. Meanwhile, the son’s bedroom hovers above the TV room deck, capturing elevated views of the water body and landscape, creating a sense of playful suspension.
