The Wave
Bali Cafe
The Wave translates the dynamic of the water into a building design. The power and gracefulness of the wave are the key inspiration for this design, showcased in its shape and flow.
Cross-laminated bamboo is the main material of this building. Bamboo is largely cultivated in Bali, bringing the local and natural feeling to the café. This somewhat novel construction material is one of the answers to a more sustainable future of built environment. Treated bamboo fibre makes not only strong, but also weather-proof façade with minimum maintenance, allowing the building to preserve its appeal over time. By introducing this material, The Wave brings together the beauty of two contrasting elements; the lively water and the sturdy wood.
The building itself has three layers. The ground floor houses a bar, kitchen, and sitting area inspired by a living room. This brings a homey feeling for customers coming to enjoy some treats with their loved ones, to relax, or even to work. More sitting areas can be found on the first floor. The top most floor is the crown jewel of this building, a rooftop terrace where customers can enjoy the view of the sea and treat themselves to the café’s specialties.
To ensure an airy feeling to the building, a generous ceiling height is also introduced in the design.
