University of Graz Library by Atelier Thomas Pucher: A Modern Fusion of History and Innovation

The University of Graz Library, redesigned byAtelier Thomas Pucher, stands as a striking example of architectural innovation that bridges historical preservation with contemporary design. Nestled at the heart of the university campus, the library has been transformed into a 21st-century knowledge hub, offering students, faculty, and visitors a seamless blend of tradition and modernity.

Architectural Concept and Design

At the core of this redesign is a two-storey glass-fronted platform, boldly extending over the historic reading room originally built in 1895. By demolishing the 1970s-built extension, the architects uncovered the heritage-listed northern façade, revealing a large covered area that enhances both the aesthetic and functional aspects of the campus’s urban landscape. This thoughtful intervention played a key role in the project’s recognition and acclaim.

The project unites multiple architectural styles and functions into a cohesive whole. Thomas Pucher introduced a transparent atrium, which not only connects the library to the main university building but also consolidates a variety of previous additions into a single harmonious structure. The result is a visual and functional dialogue between the historic and modern elements of the library, making it both a centerpiece of the campus and an inspiring space for learning.

Interior Experience and Functionality

Inside, the library offers a dynamic and versatile environment. The new atrium serves as a central entrance, events foyer, and junction, providing access from the north, south, and main university building. Students can move effortlessly from lecture halls and library service points to quiet workstations in the reading room or the upper-level glass platform, which offers additional study and collaboration spaces.

Materials and Construction

The project employs state-of-the-art facade systems, including Jansen VISS for structural glass and StoVentec for the glass rainscreen, ensuring durability, transparency, and aesthetic harmony. Fire safety is enhanced with Jansen Janisol fire doors, while high-performance Janisol HI windows maximize energy efficiency and comfort.
