Urban Playground by McCloy + Muchemwa: A Playful Urban Installation Redefining Public Space in London
Urban Playground by McCloy + Muchemwa reimagines London’s public space with playful, sustainable, and inclusive interactive urban installations.
In the fast-paced financial district of the City of London, Urban Playground by architects McCloy + Muchemwa introduces a fresh, imaginative approach to public space. Completed in 2023, this innovative 50-square-meter installation redefines the urban experience by inviting visitors—from families to city workers—to engage playfully and reflectively with their surroundings.
Unlike conventional playgrounds or sculptures, the Urban Playground challenges traditional urban design by embracing a child’s perspective. Inspired by classic wooden toys made of interlocking parts, the installation starts with two large blocks that are “carved” into various unique shapes. Some larger pieces create cavern-like spaces perfect for gathering or resting, while smaller modules are scattered to encourage exploration and creative interaction. This flexible design supports open-ended play, where there is no prescribed way to use the space—only endless possibilities for movement, seating, and discovery.

Strategically placed along a linear pedestrian street shaded by trees, the Urban Playground acts as a “breadcrumb trail,” guiding visitors through a journey of unexpected encounters. Among the hidden gems within this area are a circular labyrinth commissioned by The London Centre for Spiritual Direction and the evocative memorial sculpture Gilt of Cain by Michael Visocchi, featuring a poem by Lemn Sissay. This rich cultural context enhances the installation’s role as a place for connection, contemplation, and informal gathering.
Accessibility and inclusivity were vital in the design process. The layout offers diverse spatial experiences—from elevated podiums designed for performances to intimate, cozy clusters for quiet reflection. Children are naturally drawn to this environment, especially to smaller spaces designed with lower head clearance and bright, colorful curved or pixelated surfaces that beckon playful exploration.

Sustainability and sensory experience are embedded in the material choices. The structure’s skeleton comprises CNC-cut oriented strand board (OSB) and timber battens, finished with eco-friendly cladding made from 97% natural, CO2-neutral linoleum and 100% natural heat-treated expanded cork panels. Small non-shatter mirrored panels add further sensory diversity and interactive possibilities, making the Urban Playground a multi-sensory urban landmark.
Urban Playground stands as a testament to how creative architecture can reshape urban life—encouraging interaction, playfulness, and new ways of experiencing the city in the heart of London’s busy business district.
