Vértice House, designed by the acclaimed Brazilian firm Nommo Arquitetos, is a striking example of contemporary residential architecture skillfully crafted on a challenging and unique lot in Curitiba. Site and Design Concept

Located within a horizontal condominium, the site of Vértice House presented a rare and complex shape: a narrow 11-meter-wide frontage that widens into a “V” towards the back. This unconventional plot inspired the architects to devise a two-story home that maximizes the outdoor garden space — one of the clients’ top priorities.

The design carefully balances privacy and openness, with the building footprint strategically positioned to preserve and embrace the garden. This approach ensures an abundance of natural light and ventilation, critical elements for sustainable living in Curitiba’s temperate climate.

Architectural Composition and Materiality

The home's ground floor anchors the social and service areas with three distinct elements, each expressed through different materials:

  • A wooden front gable panel defines the private boundary and houses the entrance door, garage, and service access.
  • Two soft stone walls extend towards the internal garden, marking the house’s lateral limits and maintaining obligatory setbacks.

This combination of natural wood and stone materials grounds the home in its landscape while adding textural warmth and durability.

Interior Layout and Living Spaces

On the ground floor, the design prioritizes family and social interaction:

  • The living room, dining area, and barbecue zone open directly onto the spacious north-facing garden, promoting seamless indoor-outdoor living.
  • A fireplace adds comfort and a cozy focal point in the living area.
  • The office space and secondary service access are thoughtfully placed along the right side of the lot, connecting to an external laundry area and garden access.

Generous glazing and large openings ensure excellent natural light and ventilation throughout, supporting health and well-being.

Private Zones and Sustainable Features

The upper floor contains the private bedrooms and intimate family areas. To optimize comfort, the architects implemented advanced design solutions after extensive thermal and environmental analysis:

  • Double walls for insulation
  • Cross ventilation systems to promote air circulation
  • Movable shutters for customizable light and shade control

Each bedroom enjoys direct access to a private terrace, created by the overlapping volumes of the structure, fostering a strong connection with the outdoors.

Sustainability is further reinforced with:

  • Solar energy systems for hot water and electricity
  • Intelligent energy consumption strategies reducing the home’s ecological footprint

Vértice House is a masterful blend of innovative architectural design and sustainability, perfectly adapted to a challenging site. By embracing the unique geometry of the lot, Nommo Arquitetos created a home that opens up to nature, offering privacy, warmth, and a generous garden — fulfilling the clients’ desires for a modern, family-oriented sanctuary.
