Located in the historic district of Jongno-gu, adjacent to the iconic Chosun Palace, Volumetric Urban Space by LESS ARCHITECTS is a masterclass in urban-sensitive architecture. Completed in 2022, this 260 m² project thoughtfully integrates modern design within a centuries-old context, demonstrating how contemporary buildings can coexist with traditional streetscapes.

The design draws inspiration from the area's narrow, interconnected streets and textured historic buildings. By situating the structure toward the rear of the site, LESS ARCHITECTS created a harmonious rhythm between intimate alleys and open communal spaces. A gracefully curved brick wall and roof further define an enclosed public area, connecting seamlessly to the street on the west side.

The façade emphasizes vertical segmentation, transparency, and pedestrian interaction. Glazing, entrances, and landscaped voids invite engagement with the street, reflecting the traditional logic of Seoul’s historic urban fabric. Internally, the building’s narrow passageways link communal spaces and lead visitors to a panoramic roof garden, offering sweeping views of the historic surroundings. Each floor features interconnected voids that allow daylight penetration, natural ventilation, and fluid movement, creating a healthy and vibrant interior environment.

Sustainability was central to the project’s conception. The vertical void system enhances energy efficiency, reducing reliance on artificial lighting and mechanical ventilation. Materials were carefully selected to complement the historic context, with brickwork and steel elements providing both visual warmth and structural integrity. Interior design by SNOW reinforces the building’s understated elegance, while contractors JKS ensured precision and attention to detail throughout construction.

Its success is evident in the popularity of the area among tourists and locals alike, reinforcing the value of intimate, sustainable, and contextually aware urban design.
