A Renovation Rooted in Structure and Integration

Located in the heart of São Paulo’s upscale Jardins neighborhood, the White House Apartment underwent a thoughtful renovation by Flavia Torres Arquitetura, transforming a conventional layout into a sophisticated and integrated living space. The original apartment featured three bedrooms, but the client's desire to prioritize a larger social area prompted a reconfiguration of the interior.

During structural prospecting, the design team encountered an unexpected challenge: a series of linear exposed concrete pillars prevented the removal of a central wall, obstructing the open-plan vision. Instead of concealing or fighting this structure, Flávia Torres chose to celebrate it—turning a constraint into the project’s defining feature.

Design Strategy: Functional Elegance through Structural Honesty

To harmonize the newly divided social space, a custom metal bookcase was designed to stretch transversely between the pillars. This multifunctional element does more than just hold books and objects—it subtly guides movement through the apartment, organizes access to adjacent rooms, and highlights the raw materiality of the concrete structure.

A second, smaller metallic shelf was introduced parallel to the first, elegantly separating the TV room from the dining area. Its open form maintains the flow of natural light and cross-ventilation, striking a delicate balance between openness and privacy.

Materiality and Craftsmanship: Warmth in the Details

The flooring, a defining element of the apartment’s original character, was composed of two different types of wood. Instead of replacing it, the design retained and extended the wooden flooring into newly integrated areas, enhancing spatial continuity. This decision required precise carpentry, executed with an artisan's care to ensure that the floor’s rhythm and texture carried gracefully throughout the home.

The material palette throughout the apartment embraces a modern minimalist aesthetic with a warm touch—balancing concrete, metal, and wood in a manner that feels both contemporary and timeless.

A Case Study in Adaptive Urban Living

The White House Apartment is an excellent example of adaptive reuse in residential design, where limitations become opportunities. The project showcases how structural honesty, material sensitivity, and custom detailing can transform a standard apartment into a distinctive urban home—tailored to both the physical constraints and the personal lifestyle of its inhabitants.
