Wu Wei Apartment by Degree Design: A Minimalist Retreat That Embraces Flow, Light, and Natural Balance
A serene minimalist apartment by Degree Design, embracing Wu Wei through open spaces, natural light, raw materials, and harmonious spatial flow.
Designed by Tseng Chih-Hao of Degree Design, the Wu Wei Apartment in New Taipei City, Taiwan, transforms a compact 76 m² residence into a serene, light-filled sanctuary rooted in Daoist philosophy. Completed in 2024, the project reinterprets the concept of Wu Wei—“effortless action”—through an interior that releases unnecessary boundaries, invites natural light to move freely, and celebrates the raw honesty of materials.
A Calm Refuge in an Urban Maze
New Taipei City’s dense urban fabric forms the backdrop for a home conceived as an antidote to overstimulation. The design narrative begins with an acknowledgment of metropolitan life as a “concrete jungle”—a place where choices overwhelm and direction feels uncertain. Within this context, Wu Wei Apartment becomes a place of restoration, offering spatial clarity and equilibrium in contrast to the chaos outside.
The design aims to center the resident both physically and emotionally by cultivating a quiet environment where movement, perception, and light align harmoniously.

Working With the Irregular: Turning Spatial Challenges Into Opportunities
Faced with an irregular floor plan, Degree Design chose not to disguise asymmetry but to work with it. Through meticulous realignment of spatial axes, the layout evolves into a composition where forms appear to fall naturally into place.
Unnecessary divisions are removed to create open sightlines that connect the living, dining, and circulation zones. This newfound continuity allows sunlight and outdoor views to filter across the apartment without visual interruption, creating a sense of expansion far beyond its compact footprint.
The approach captures the essence of Wu Wei: movement without force, design without excessive intervention.
Light, Openness, and the Power of Negative Space
The apartment’s ceiling beams remain exposed, contributing intentional negative space that frames the interior while avoiding decorative excess. This decision reinforces material honesty and fosters a sense of uncomplicated purity.
Carefully chosen finishes add depth without overwhelming the spatial calm. Dark mineral textures, stone inserts, and gentle lighting work in harmony, balancing rawness and refinement. These subtle accents emphasize the shifting interplay of light and shadow, creating an ambiance that evolves throughout the day.

Material Authenticity and Harmonious Contrast
Instead of concealing imperfections or imposing symmetry, the design highlights the authenticity of each material. Stainless steel surfaces introduce soft reflectivity, expanding the visual volume of the space and enriching the dialogue between solid and void, stillness and flow.
The contrast between industrial elements, organic surfaces, and restrained color palettes delivers a unique spatial rhythm that feels both contemporary and timeless.

A Home That Moves With Life’s Unpredictable Rhythm
Just as life is defined by twists, uncertainties, and moments of clarity, the Wu Wei Apartment reflects the belief that peace comes from embracing the natural course of things rather than resisting them. The interior’s fluid layout encourages a mindset of calm observation and gentle progression—supporting residents as they navigate daily choices, emotions, and transitions.
The message is subtle yet powerful: whether we hold on or let go, what matters most is the continuous movement forward. In that motion, we remain grounded, intentional, and never truly lost.

The Dao of Contemporary Living
The Wu Wei Apartment stands as a thoughtful reinterpretation of minimalist living infused with cultural philosophy. Through openness, authenticity, and careful restraint, Degree Design creates a home that embodies balance—an urban retreat where architecture, light, and life flow effortlessly together.
