Contextual Integration in the Vineyards of San Miguel de Allende

Located on the outskirts of San Miguel de Allende, Zarcillo Residence is a weekend retreat immersed in a tranquil vineyard setting. Designed by architect Agustin Rocha of estudio ar, the house is conceived as a place of quiet retreat and social interaction, blending effortlessly with its natural surroundings.

Set on irregular terrain marked by a westward ravine and native vegetation—particularly sweet stick trees and cactus pears—the residence takes its form from both topography and context. The architectural intervention carefully respects the existing landscape, allowing the land to guide the spatial organization and massing.

Material Warmth and Local Craft

Materiality plays a central role in the home’s atmosphere. The primary construction material is locally sourced red brick, infused with a warm visual character through a unique finish derived from sills block mixtures. This brick surface lends the structure a tactile authenticity, grounding it in the regional craft and echoing the earthen palette of its surroundings.

The natural material choices—brick, timber, and stone—are complemented by architectural elements such as exposed beams and soft lighting, producing a rustic-modern aesthetic that celebrates both texture and spatial fluidity.

A Spatial Composition of Blocks and Transitions

The Zarcillo Residence is composed of four distinct volumes, or blocks, organized in a horseshoe configuration that opens toward the ravine. This composition intentionally separates private and communal spaces, enhancing both functionality and spatial privacy.

  • Private quarters are housed in the taller end blocks, providing isolation and serenity.
  • Social spaces, including a terrace and a pool, occupy the central lower blocks, creating zones for gathering and outdoor enjoyment.

These blocks are linked by a linear walkway oriented eastward, acting as a transitional spine. A change in material along this axis signals spatial shifts while inviting natural light and ventilation into the passageways.

This configuration not only maximizes views toward the vineyard and ravine but also minimizes exposure to the street, enhancing a sense of retreat and enclosure. The varied rooflines—particularly the four-sloped roofs on the interior blocks—help the massing harmonize with the surrounding landscape.

A Fortified Yet Open Architectural Language

The architectural language draws inspiration from the idea of a fortress—not in terms of opacity, but in how the forms embrace and protect the interior spaces. The courtyard strategy formed by the U-shape plan enhances spatial intimacy while framing expansive natural vistas.

From the outside, the clean volumes and carefully controlled fenestration project a sense of stillness and rootedness. Inside, large glazed openings and timber finishes soften the architectural edges, creating a welcoming and comfortable domestic environment.
