Zoii Kids Retail Space by Architettura Tommasi: A Playful Design in Historic Padua
Zoii Kids by Architettura Tommasi blends vibrant, playful interiors with historic Padua architecture, creating a joyful, contemporary retail space for children.
Blending History with Contemporary Design
The Zoii Kids retail space, designed by Architettura Tommasi, is a striking example of how contemporary design can harmonize with historic architecture. Located in the heart of Padua, near the iconic Piazza dei Signori, the store caters to children's clothing while emphasizing a playful, engaging, and visually stimulating environment.

The renovation carefully balances the preservation of architectural heritage with modern interventions, creating a retail space that is both functional and inspiring.

Preserving Historical Details
A standout feature of this project is the meticulous attention given to the original entrance door and display window. Both elements underwent a thorough restoration process by skilled craftsmen:
- Layers of accumulated dirt and dark paint were gently removed
- Damaged wood affected by water or woodworm was carefully replaced
- A water-based varnish was applied to preserve the natural texture and color of the wood
This careful restoration respects the building's historic integrity while allowing it to interact seamlessly with contemporary design features.

Vibrant Interiors for Children
The interior concept centers around bold, vibrant colors, including yellow, blue, and magenta, chosen specifically to create a joyful and stimulating atmosphere for young visitors. These colors are applied consistently across:
- Walls
- Custom-designed furniture made of tubular metal and wood
- Fitting rooms and service areas
The result is a cohesive, playful environment that encourages exploration and interaction while maintaining a clean, modern aesthetic.

Thoughtful Flooring and Sustainable Choices
To protect the original wooden parquet flooring, the design team installed a reversible carpet layer without adhesives. This non-invasive method preserves the historical flooring for future restoration while allowing the space to remain functional and stylish.

Innovative Branding Without Conventional Signage
Given the building's historic status, traditional signage was not allowed. Architettura Tommasi solved this challenge creatively by:
- Using opaque vinyl decals on the shop windows
- Integrating the store’s branding into the black, yellow, blue, and magenta interior palette
- Creating a subtle yet distinctive identity visible to passersby

This approach transforms the storefront into a branding and design element that communicates the store’s playful identity while respecting its historic context.

The Result: Contemporary Meets Historic
The Zoii Kids retail space demonstrates how contemporary design and historic preservation can coexist beautifully. The combination of vibrant colors, playful furniture, and thoughtful material choices creates a retail environment that feels fresh, joyful, and inviting, all while celebrating the architectural heritage of Padua’s city center.

This project is a benchmark for creative retail design, proving that careful restoration and innovative design can deliver a unique shopping experience for children and parents alike.
