Annette K Sports Health & Well-Being Center, Paris
Floating wellness center on the Seine combines Olympic swimming, inclusive sports, Nordic bathing, and light-filled architecture reconnecting Paris with water.
Located along the banks of the Seine in Paris, the Annette K Sports Health & Well-Being Center by Seine Design reintroduces the long-lost culture of urban bathing to the French capital. Conceived as a vibrant public living space dedicated to physical health, mental well-being, and social interaction, the project recalls historic Parisian swimming traditions such as the Deligny pools and the poetic water scenes of the Impressionist era.
Completed in 2023 on the Port de Javel Bas site, the 4,200-square-meter complex transforms a riverside barge into a contemporary wellness destination where swimming, sport, leisure, and care coexist throughout the day.

A Floating Urban Wellness Landscape
Winner of the 2017 international competition, Annette K was envisioned as a generous, continuous spatial sequence rather than a single-purpose sports facility. At its heart lies an Olympic-length swimming pool, complemented by a comprehensive sports health and well-being center. These primary functions are seamlessly interwoven with a café, restaurant, spa, and physiotherapy offices, creating a dynamic environment active from morning to evening.
The project places strong emphasis on conviviality and inclusivity. Designed in close collaboration with specialists in disabled and adapted sports, the building ensures universal accessibility. The swimming pool remains visually present throughout the structure and is accessible in multiple ways, reinforcing the idea of shared experience and openness.

Architecture Inspired by Navigation and Nordic Bathing
Architecturally, Annette K draws heavily from the language of shipbuilding. The suspended Nordic swimming pool appears like the hull of a life-sized ketch resting on its base, constructed from a restrained palette of wood, steel, and glass. This maritime expression strengthens the relationship between the building and the river, allowing the structure to sit lightly within the Seine’s urban landscape.
The Nordic pool concept encourages year-round outdoor bathing: swimming under rain, cold air, or winter skies, blurring the boundaries between interior and exterior. Enclosed spaces on the rooftop terrace are minimized, fostering a direct connection with natural elements. A running track wraps the terrace perimeter, forming a dynamic ring that offers a 360-degree panoramic view of the river and city.

Structural Innovation and Spatial Clarity
The swimming pool structure is crafted entirely in stainless steel, designed with a dual function. On one side, it holds the Olympic-sized pool; on the other, it acts as the primary infrastructure for the building’s lower decks. Spider-like structural legs support walls and panels while integrating electrical and plumbing systems into a single exposed framework.
This strategy liberates the interior spaces from dropped ceilings and raised floors, allowing the architecture to remain visually honest and legible. Circular portholes puncture the structure, offering glimpses of moving water and channeling daylight deep into the building. Reflections from the Seine animate the interiors, producing shimmering light effects reminiscent of Impressionist paintings.

Energy, Atmosphere, and Sensory Experience
Sustainability and comfort are integral to the design. Heat generated by the swimming pool is reused to warm the spaces below, optimizing energy efficiency while enhancing user comfort. Sunlight enters from all directions, and the constant presence of water: seen, heard, and reflected, creates a calming, immersive atmosphere.
Annette K ultimately functions as more than a sports facility. It is an urban retreat, a social condenser, and a contemporary reinterpretation of Paris’s relationship with water: where health, leisure, architecture, and landscape merge into a single fluid experience.
