Conceptualized as an oasis in the heart of the city, the hotel offers an experience deeply ingrained with references to Singapore's culture, tropical climate, and lush greenery.

Historical Context

The site of the Artyzen Hotel was once home to "Villa Marie," a sprawling tropical garden mansion built in the 1940s by the great-grandson of Singapore’s well-known philanthropist, Tan Tock Seng. The mansion's charming proportions and intimate scale contrasted sharply with the surrounding high-rise structures. This historical context inspired the design of the Artyzen Hotel, embracing the villa's unique past and reinterpreting its architectural elements for a modern structure.

Architectural Design

The building massing of the Artyzen Hotel is designed as villas stacked vertically, creating what can be described as "sky villas." Each of these villas features its own garden, extending the landscape vertically and creating a unique architecture deeply rooted in Singapore's tropical lushness. Key architectural elements such as high ceilings, verandas, courtyard gardens, arches, and terra-cotta roof tiles are reinterpreted in the new structure. This approach not only connects the architecture to its unique context but also rediscover climatic design wisdom relevant to contemporary times.

Interior and Exterior Features

The hotel's exterior features a striking façade with cast aluminum panels cladded on the East and West sides, providing a double skin envelope that reduces solar heat gain. Guest room balconies are lined with steel mesh screens reminiscent of traditional shophouse window screens, serving as shading devices and providing privacy to the occupants. The building's fenestration is carefully oriented to avoid the East and West directions, minimizing heat and solar glare.

Inside, the hotel is designed with a strong emphasis on verticality. The main communal spaces on the 4th and 5th storeys are staggered and connected spatially, creating an elevated garden space laced with lush greenery. High-level planters with draping softscapes and a mirrored ceiling reflecting the greenery below enhance the sense of openness and connection to nature.

Sky Gardens and Guest Rooms

From the 8th floor upwards, multiple sky gardens are connected to adjacent guest rooms, allowing guests to step out from their balconies directly into a tropical garden. These sky gardens not only enhance the aesthetic appeal but also provide natural ventilation throughout the building. The rooftop terrace features a lap pool slightly cantilevered from the building mass, offering stunning views of the contrasting urban scenes of Orchard Road's dynamic shopping belt and the serene low-rise Nassim Hill area.

Sustainable Design

The façade's double skin envelope and steel mesh screens reduce solar heat gain, enhancing energy efficiency.
