BPE House – Sustainable Biophilic Living in Mengwi, Indonesia
BPE House in Mengwi combines sustainable design, biophilic principles, solar power, permaculture gardens, and breathtaking river views for immersive living.
The BPE House, designed and built by Bali Gedeg Builders, is an exquisite example of sustainable residential architecture, harmoniously blending modern design with the lush natural landscape of Mengwi, Indonesia. Completed in 2020, this 1400 m² residence reflects a careful consideration of environmental impact, energy efficiency, and biophilic principles, creating a home that is both luxurious and deeply connected to its surroundings.

Site and Context
Situated on a gently sloping site that descends toward the nearby river, the BPE House embraces its environment with a design that follows the natural fall of the land. The river’s rapids provide a dynamic auditory backdrop, offering a calming and meditative atmosphere that shifts with seasonal rainfall. The residence’s orientation ensures that every room maximizes natural light and views, while maintaining privacy and tranquility.

Design Concept
The design philosophy of BPE House centers on the seamless integration of nature and human habitation. High ceilings, open living spaces, and expansive windows establish a continuous connection with the outdoors, while carefully considered breezeways in bedrooms and offices reduce reliance on air conditioning. The architecture is intentionally minimalist, avoiding artificial colors or decorative artwork, allowing the surrounding natural beauty to become the focal point of every space.
A striking copper wall in the atrium serves both a symbolic and functional purpose, deflecting electromagnetic fields while representing love and connection, inspired by Venus. Interiors incorporate sustainable materials such as recycled antique teak for floors and ceilings, and highly polished concrete, balancing aesthetic appeal with longevity and environmental responsibility.

Sustainability Features
Sustainability is embedded in every aspect of BPE House. The residence is powered by a solar energy system from Inecosolar, while an integrated water treatment system ensures pure drinking water is available in all rooms. Permaculture gardens, designed by True Nature Nusantara, not only enhance the beauty of the property but also support the health and well-being of residents. Aluminum-framed windows in neutral grey tones blend seamlessly with the natural palette of the environment, reinforcing the home’s eco-conscious identity.

Interior and Spatial Experience
The grand entrance introduces visitors to a home that balances openness with privacy. The central living areas flow naturally into outdoor courtyards and terraces, creating an immersive experience with the surrounding landscape. Bedrooms and private offices provide intimate retreats, while the upper deck houses the master suite, two offices, and a rooftop garden, offering panoramic views and a peaceful escape.
The kitchen is designed for functionality and social connection, featuring a butler’s kitchen with an open window to facilitate interaction between staff and residents. A semi-detached two-bedroom loft with a pool and sun deck extends the property’s utility, providing both rental income and additional living space.

Construction and Project Management
Constructing a residence of this scale required meticulous planning and attention to detail. The waterproofing of the structure was a priority to ensure durability in a tropical environment. The project navigated complex supply chain challenges and labor management during the pandemic, ultimately reaching completion in 20 months. The outcome is a home that combines architectural sophistication with environmental responsibility, offering a sanctuary that enhances the well-being of its inhabitants.
