Casa Yuri by Zozaya Arquitectos – A Coastal Masterpiece in Zihuatanejo
Casa Yuri by Zozaya Arquitectos is a luxurious oceanfront residence in Zihuatanejo, blending modern design, palapa structure, sustainability, and cliffside elegance.
Casa Yuri is a breathtaking contemporary residence designed by Zozaya Arquitectos, perched on a dramatic oceanfront cliff in Zihuatanejo, Mexico. Spanning over 2,172 m², this private home reinterprets the traditional Zihuatanejo vernacular through a bold, modern architectural lens, harmoniously integrating with its natural surroundings. With full creative freedom from the client, ZAR crafted a home that is both expansive and intimate, blending luxury, functionality, and sustainable design principles.

Architecture and Spatial Organization
From the earliest concept sketches, Casa Yuri was envisioned to maximize the potential of its coastal topography. Visitors are welcomed by a lushly landscaped pedestrian ramp leading to a motor lobby that orchestrates circulation throughout the residence. Here, dual paths emerge: a discreet service route to the kitchen, laundry, and staff quarters, and a grand sculptural staircase that rises dramatically, revealing panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean.

At the pinnacle of the residence, an open-air vestibule connects private quarters to the home's centerpiece: the great palapa. At over 17 meters in diameter and rising 11 meters at its lowest point, this is ZAR’s largest palapa for a private residence. Constructed with reinforced concrete, palm wood, and steel, it incorporates tension cables and hurricane anchoring systems to withstand coastal storms while maintaining a sense of effortless elegance.
Beneath the palapa, life unfolds across multiple functional areas: the main dining room, a bar and grill, secondary dining spaces, the principal lounge, and shaded lounging zones beside a cantilevered infinity pool that hovers above the cliff, minimizing site impact and preserving the natural terrain.

Private Quarters and Guest Spaces
The lower level houses the principal suite, study, gym, sauna, and pool machinery rooms. Positioned closest to the sea, these spaces immerse occupants in the rhythm and sound of the waves, integrating nature into daily life.
On the main level, three en-suite guest rooms are connected by a covered portico overlooking the Pacific, creating one of the home’s most contemplative spaces. The upper level features two additional suites with a shared terrace under a striking suspended steel pergola, alongside a playroom, garden with grill, and a secondary children’s pool—providing elevated privacy and scenic views.

Materials and Finishes
Casa Yuri celebrates local craftsmanship and materials, incorporating:
- A traditional palm-thatched palapa roof
- Wooden ceilings and handcrafted parota wood cabinetry
- River stone floors and trims
- IP wood decks and chukum-style plaster finishes
- Bush-hammered Vermont beige marble with anti-slip properties
This palette reflects the coastal spirit of Zihuatanejo while offering durability, luxury, and tactile warmth.

Landscape and Sustainability
Designed by Entorno (Mexico City), the landscape integrates native flora, flowering species, and green roofs that soften the architectural impact while enhancing the sensory experience. Casa Yuri embraces bioclimatic design principles: cross-ventilation, thick walls, elevated roofs, and deep overhangs minimize reliance on air conditioning. A wastewater treatment system recycles water for irrigation, underscoring the residence’s commitment to sustainable luxury.

Technical Achievements
Building Casa Yuri posed significant technical challenges. Certain areas required blasting to embed the home into the terrain without disrupting the landscape. Despite slower-than-expected construction, the result is a residence that settles seamlessly into the cliffside, combining structural resilience with architectural elegance.

Completed in just 18 months, Casa Yuri is one of Zozaya Arquitectos’ most ambitious projects. It represents a harmonious dialogue between architecture, landscape, and ocean, offering a home that is not just lived in but celebrated. This residence exemplifies the fusion of contemporary luxury, environmental sensitivity, and coastal vernacular reinterpretation.
