Plug-In Modular Student Housing
Yogyakarta, Indonesia is often referred as the city of education, for it has more than 100 higher educational institutions and a vibrant academic community. Yogya or often refer by the local as Jogja, is also an old city that has variety of heritage places such as colonial buildings which serve as high cultural tourist attraction, contributing to the city's economic, social and cultural sector.
However, there are many unused land and buildings that has been abandoned and collapsed especially around the university area. Therefore most students can only rely on limited campus facilities or rent in expensive rental rooms, located far away from university.
This modular design seek to solve the rising rents in high- density urban areas, made of shipping containers which can fit in these compact and empty land.
However, its elongated and linear layout cause the site and design to be flanked by existing building and only has one facade -facing the busy road.
How can we achieve better quality of living in such limitations?
Many of existing rental rooms in urban areas are not fit and comfortable to live in because they are too cramped. The crowded and busy environment causes pollution (noise and smell).
Rumaku was designed to fit into a 14mx30m plot area, which equivalent to two plot size of traditional shop house. The size is used as it is most found in shop house throughout Southeast Asia. The space and arrangement of each room unit designed to achieve these qualities:
QUALITY OF LIVING Green open space allow good ventilation between room units. Each units were designed to face main road and courtyard in the centre
SPACES All public facilities such as cafe/shop, laudary area, common space are located on the ground floor to gives privacy to its tenants
COURTYARD Green couryard as common space to promotes environmental quality of an internal space, by reducing negative impact on the building and the natural environment
PRIVACY Spaces and orientation of room unit provides privacy to its tenants
SPACIOUS Spacious room layout for students to do multiple activities within its compound
REPLICABILITY Plug-in modular concept which follow size of standard shop house plot found in Southeast Asia
